Decide which role you are applying for
Application decision: Important distinction · What to use: Advanced autonomy or perception research may require graduate-level preparation, while integration, embedded and test roles may use undergraduate skills. Read the requirements carefully. Do not imply that a classroom robot is suitable for unsupervised real-world deployment.
Application decision: Role routes · What to use: Computer hardware, embedded systems and validation; Electrical, controls and power engineering; Software development, testing and technical implementation; Mechanical design, test and product engineering
Application decision: Relevant coursework · What to use: controls, kinematics, embedded systems, programming, sensing and mechanical design.
Application decision: Employer entry points · What to use: NVIDIA university recruiting; GE Aerospace U.S. internships and co-ops
Build this work sample
Use a simulator or safe educational platform to complete a defined task. Document sensing assumptions, control logic and failure states. Test what happens when a sensor is noisy, an object is missing or timing changes. Explain which part of the system you built and compare the result with a simple baseline. Keep testing away from people and hazardous equipment.
A test that makes the sample credible
Document how the system reacts when a sensor is unavailable in a safe simulation. Compare the expected and observed states. Keep mechanical, control and software contributions identifiable; a demonstration of the nominal path is not enough to show that you understand system behavior.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Computer hardware, embedded systems and validation
Hardware and embedded work sits at the boundary between physical devices and software. Roles may involve board-level design, firmware, verification, validation or performance testing. Search hardware intern, embedded software, firmware, silicon validation and test engineering. The BLS computer hardware engineer profile helps distinguish hardware development from general application programming.
Electrical, controls and power engineering
Electrical engineering internships may focus on circuits, power systems, electronics, instrumentation or controls. Search the specific area alongside the degree name: electrical test, controls, power engineering, validation or electronics design. The BLS electrical and electronics engineering profile describes these occupational areas, not a universal qualification list for interns.
Software development, testing and technical implementation
Software internships can involve product features, internal tools, test automation, integrations or infrastructure. Search beyond the largest consumer platforms: employers in manufacturing, finance, healthcare and retail also maintain software teams. The BLS software development and quality assurance profile describes these occupational functions, not a single standardized internship curriculum.
Mechanical design, test and product engineering
Mechanical engineering work connects a physical requirement with a design that can be manufactured, tested and maintained. Design, test, thermal analysis, reliability and manufacturing support are different internship routes. The BLS mechanical engineering profile supplies occupational background; the employer’s posting determines which tools and coursework are required.
Application and offer checks
Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.
Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.
Background
Robotics Engineering requires evidence that parts work together. Controls, perception, embedded software, mechanical design and test can each be an internship focus. Avoid applying as a general robotics enthusiast when the role needs a specific contribution. A modest system with reliable sensing, behavior and tests is more persuasive than an ambitious demonstration that only works under carefully staged conditions.
