Build this work sample

Design an analysis of a public dataset with a pre-specified question. Report an estimate and uncertainty, check sensitivity to one reasonable modeling choice and explain missingness. Compare the result with a simpler descriptive summary. Include a short section on what the sample cannot tell you and how a better study could address that limitation.

A test that makes the sample credible

Alter a missing-data or sampling assumption and rerun the estimate. Explain why the interval or conclusion changes. Give a reader the analysis script and the definition of the population you can speak about, rather than generalizing beyond the observations available.

Read the work behind the title

Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling

Data science combines data preparation, statistical reasoning and model evaluation. The title covers work with very different levels of research depth, so distinguish applied undergraduate roles from internships explicitly designed for graduate researchers. The BLS data scientist profile explains the occupation; an employer’s degree and coursework requirements still control eligibility.

Business analytics and decision support

Business analytics is useful when it changes a decision. That can mean investigating a decline in conversion, estimating a capacity constraint or reconciling two reporting systems before a manager acts. Search business analyst, operations analyst, decision science, business intelligence and analytics intern. The BLS operations research profile describes a more mathematical neighboring occupation; not every business analytics internship requires optimization or advanced modeling.

Actuarial, pricing and insurance analytics

Actuarial work applies probability, financial reasoning and data analysis to uncertain future costs. Pricing, reserving, retirement and risk work do not use identical datasets or business questions. Search actuarial intern as well as pricing analyst, risk analyst and insurance analytics, then check whether the posting specifies exams or particular coursework. The BLS actuary profile describes the occupation and its examination-based development; it does not establish a universal exam threshold for interns.

Social research, user insight and evaluation

Social research skills can support evaluation, customer insight, community research and organizational studies. Search research assistant, qualitative research, evaluation, insights and social science intern. The BLS sociologist profile explains the professional research occupation; it is not a statement that undergraduate internships require or confer the same qualifications.

Application and offer checks

Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.

Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.

Background

Statistics is valuable when you can distinguish an estimate from the conclusion someone wants to draw from it. Internships may involve experimentation, survey analysis, risk, research support or business measurement. Your recruiting story should connect statistical reasoning with a domain and a usable output. A proof-heavy transcript can be useful, but employers also need to see that you can handle real data and explain uncertainty.
