Applying & interviews
Application limits and interview process
That makes prioritization part of the application. Four combinations disappear quickly if a student treats New York Investment Banking, New York Markets, Chicago Asset Management, New York Asset Management and Dallas Engineering as independent experiments. Before submitting, rank the combinations by actual work, evidence strength and office preference.
Preparation should therefore be division-specific:
• Investment Banking: accounting, valuation, capital structure, transaction logic and one real deal or financing discussion.
• Markets: product mechanics, current drivers, risk, mental math/probability where relevant, and code/model depth for quant-strats.
• Asset Management investing: thesis, valuation or underwriting, downside and portfolio context.
• Asset Management client/product: client objective, product structure, fees, liquidity, risk and positioning.
• Wealth: markets plus client balance-sheet, planning and lending judgment.
• Engineering: coding, systems, data, reliability and project ownership; expect the separate HackerRank step.
• Controllers/Treasury/Risk: accounting or balance-sheet fluency, controls, scenarios, liquidity/capital or risk judgment appropriate to the function.
Pay & location
Pay, location, work mode and authorization
There is no defensible company-wide U.S. intern pay figure in the current evidence set. The accessible employer role pages reviewed for this report did not expose a compensation field. Third-party copies may publish salary ranges, but this report does not substitute them for a current employer-controlled pay statement. When Goldman exposes pay in the application or offer, preserve the original unit, role, location and academic level. Do not generalize a New York front-office number to Chicago Wealth, Salt Lake City Treasury or Engineering.
The same rule applies to work authorization, sponsorship, housing, relocation, overtime and work mode. The accessible role text in this bounded sample did not establish one uniform policy, so silence is recorded as unknown. A broad Goldman office policy does not create remote eligibility for a particular internship, and a full-time benefits page does not establish intern benefits.
Location is highly role-specific. The sample itself spans New York, Chicago and Salt Lake City. A student should treat business/location as part of the role because Goldman’s application cap counts the combination, not merely the business family. [Sources 6–15]

Executive read
Goldman Sachs is several internship markets inside one employer. The useful choice is not simply “Goldman or another bank.” It is investment banking and financing versus FICC and Equities versus asset management versus wealth management versus Engineering, Controllers, Corporate Treasury, Risk or another corporate function. Those routes solve different problems, use different evidence, and can recruit through different program or role pages.
The firm’s current public business map centers on Global Banking & Markets (GBM), Asset & Wealth Management (AWM) and Platform Solutions. Goldman reported $58.3 billion of 2025 net revenue, and its 2025 annual report describes GBM and AWM as the core franchises it is trying to grow. Within GBM, Investment Banking covers advisory and financing, while FICC and Equities covers market making, client transactions, financing and risk. AWM spans public and private investing, client solutions and private wealth. Engineering and control functions sit across the platform. [Sources 1–2]
The business and why the division matters
Goldman Sachs’s 2025 annual report shows why a student should choose the economic problem before choosing the logo. GBM benefits from strategic transactions, underwriting, financing and client flows. AWM grows through management fees, private banking and lending, liquid strategies and alternatives. Goldman’s current business page also separates Investment Banking from FICC and Equities inside GBM and separates Asset Management from Wealth Management inside AWM. [Sources 1–2]
Investment Banking advises companies and institutions on transactions and financing. Goldman’s current business page identifies mergers and acquisitions and Capital Solutions as major components. The Capital Solutions Group combines underwriting, financing, origination, structuring and risk-management capabilities across public and private markets. For a student, that means “banking” can include classic strategic advisory, equity or debt financing, liability management and more quantitative financing work. Do not assume every Investment Banking posting is an M&A coverage role. [Sources 1–2]
FICC and Equities is a markets business. It makes markets, facilitates client transactions, provides financing and helps clients manage risk across rates, credit, currencies, commodities, equities, derivatives and related products. Sales, trading, structuring and quantitative strategy sit near one another but are not interchangeable. A client-sales seat is different from a risk-taking or liquidity role; a quant-strats seat is different again because its direct posting emphasizes mathematics, programming and model construction. [Sources 2, 7]
Asset Management is an investing and client-solutions platform. Goldman’s current business page describes more than $3 trillion of assets under supervision across public and private markets, including equities, fixed income, liquidity, alternatives and multi-asset solutions. Wealth Management instead serves wealthy individuals, family offices, foundations and other clients through investment advice, financial planning, banking and related solutions. The difference matters in applications: a security-selection thesis is useful for an investing team but may be poor evidence for a client-solutions, marketing or financial-planning role. Engineering, Controllers, Corporate Treasury and Risk are substantive routes with different customers. Engineering builds systems used across markets, risk, data and the enterprise. Controllers is responsible for the accuracy of financial and regulatory information and advises on accounting, valuation, capital and liquidity. Corporate Treasury manages liquidity, funding, capital and the allocation of financial resources. Risk independently evaluates exposures and controls. These functions can be close to revenue and senior decisions without being front-office transaction roles. [Sources 11–14]
What the main routes actually ask you to do
Investment banking and financing
Economic question: What transaction, financing or capital structure best serves the client, and how should it be valued and executed?
For conventional advisory or financing work, the relevant evidence is accounting, valuation, transaction reasoning, capital structure and precise execution. A credible student work sample is a short company and transaction memo with operating drivers, valuation, financing alternatives, key risks and a recommendation. The point is not to reproduce a 60-tab model; it is to show that the numbers change a decision.
FICC and equities / markets
Economic question: What price, risk, financing or market action makes sense now for the client or desk?
A markets applicant should be able to discuss a specific product family, the forces moving it, the relevant risk and what would invalidate a view. For sales, the test is whether a market idea can be turned into a useful client conversation. For trading, it is pricing, liquidity, risk and decision speed. For structuring, it is product design and quantitative reasoning. For quantitative strategy, the evidence should include models or code, data construction, validation, failure modes and the financial interpretation of the output.
Asset management
Economic question: Where should client capital be invested, how should risk be sized, or how should an investment product be positioned for a client?
For investment roles, a strong work sample is an investment memo that states the thesis, valuation or underwriting framework, downside, catalysts, portfolio fit and evidence that would change the view. Private-credit, infrastructure or private-equity work should address leverage, cash flow, transaction structure and downside. For product, marketing or client-solutions work, the output is different: compare strategies for a defined client need, explain vehicle, liquidity, fees, risk, benchmark and positioning, and show how the recommendation changes with the client.
Wealth management
Economic question: What combination of portfolio, planning, liquidity, lending and banking choices best fits a client’s goals and constraints?
Engineering
Economic question: What system, data or infrastructure decision makes the financial workflow faster, safer, more reliable or more scalable?
Controllers, corporate treasury and risk
Employee and intern experience: what the secondary evidence can and cannot say
Candidate report · 2026-09-05
Employer pages are good for program rules; they are weak evidence about team experience. Indeed’s U.S. Goldman Sachs Summer Analyst review surface, retrieved September 5, displayed 35 reviews in the visible filter. The most recent Summer Analyst entry surfaced in the page was from Albany dated March 12, 2026. That reviewer described Goldman as a useful place to start a career but criticized micromanagement, stress and analyst pay. Older visible Summer Analyst examples were also mixed: a 2023 Dallas reviewer described kind management but substantial bureaucracy and feeling like one person in a very large firm; a 2023 Salt Lake City Summer Analyst Intern in operations criticized monotony; a 2021 Chicago reviewer described supportive people alongside deliberately heavy workloads and long hours. [Source 16]
Those are self-selected anecdotes across different offices, functions and years. They do not establish a Goldman-wide satisfaction score, normal workweek or return-offer rate. They do establish the questions worth asking before accepting a role: What did last summer’s intern actually own? How is team placement decided? Who reviews the work? What are normal and peak hours for this exact team? How often does the manager meet the intern? How are return decisions made? Is the role attached to a stable team or a broader pool?
For a student choosing among Goldman teams, team-level diligence can matter more than the parent brand. Investment Banking, a quant-strats desk, Wealth Financial Planning, Engineering and Controllers should not be expected to have the same hours, feedback cadence or work product.
Who should prioritize Goldman Sachs
It is a weaker target when the thesis is only prestige, when the applicant needs one generic resume for unrelated functions, or when the applicant cannot prioritize within the four-combination constraint. A current Goldman title can also be narrower than the division name suggests. “Investment Banking Quantitative Strats” is not a conventional banker seat; “Asset Marketing” is not proof of direct investing; “Private Investing Summer Associate” is not an undergraduate Summer Analyst.
Student action:
1. Choose one primary route and no more than three adjacent business/location combinations before using the four-slot application budget.
2. Save the direct role page and title. Record academic level, location, Apply status, explicit deadline if any, pay if displayed, and authorization language if displayed.
3. Resolve the Summer Analyst undergraduate-versus-“bachelors / graduate” wording conflict from the exact application if you are a graduate student. Do not rely on a generic template.
4. Build one proof asset that resembles the route’s output: transaction memo, markets/model project, investment memo, client solution, engineering system, controller reconciliation or liquidity/risk analysis.
5. Prepare for the current employer-published interview sequence: roughly 30-minute video interview, HackerRank for Engineering, then two to five Superday interviews if advanced.
6. Contact employees in the exact business and office. Ask about project ownership, staffing, manager access, normal and peak hours and prior intern conversion.
7. Compare offers at the team level. Brand, work, manager, hours, location, pay and conversion path can point in different directions.
