Nine routes, five different kinds of evidence

This table is a dated snapshot checked September 22, 2026. It compares what the organizer currently says students do, not how prestigious the logo feels. Current status is deliberately separated from program type: a closed competition can still show what kind of evidence that route creates, while an always-open simulation can be usable immediately.

The evidence codes are narrow. PAID_CLIENT_WORK means the student is selected to complete a paid professional project for a real organization. JUDGED_SUBMISSION means a named deliverable is scored, ranked or presented in a competitive process. EMPLOYER_PROJECT_EVENT means students do a case, challenge or hackathon inside an employer program, but the source does not describe employment. OPEN_PRACTICE means anyone can complete a simulated task without being selected. SIMULATED_COMPETITION means the work is scored competitively, but the environment itself is simulated.

A named deliverable is not the same thing as a public portfolio artifact. Unless the primary source explicitly grants publication or retention rights, this guide marks portfolio permission NOT_STATED. Keep that distinction when deciding what to show recruiters.

If you need real paid work, separate it from practice and prizes

In this nine-route cohort, Parker Dewey is the only route whose primary description explicitly says the selected student completes a paid professional project for a real company. That makes it materially different from an employer simulation or summit. Selection is project-specific, and registering for the platform is not the same thing as winning a project.

Do not collapse different relationships into one résumé label

Prize money is not wages. Point72 describes scholarship prizes, IMC offered cash prizes to eligible top performers, and Crowe runs a judged competition. Those can be useful external signals, but the relationship is still a competition rather than employment.

Capital One provides a useful boundary check on its same early-career page: its separate Analyst Early Internship Program is a 10-week paid, in-person internship in which students are paired with a team to complete a company project. That paid internship is not counted in the nine pre-internship/work-sample routes above. If your goal is actual internship employment, apply for the employment route when you meet its requirements rather than relabeling a Summit as an internship.

If your résumé already has projects, add outside judgment instead of another private exercise

Point72, Citadel and Crowe require a submission that an external organization evaluates. IMC Prosperity also creates an objective competitive result through its scoring engine and leaderboard, although the market is simulated. Those routes add something a self-directed project cannot: someone outside your class or friend group decides whether the work advances, ranks well or wins.

Point72 is the strongest feedback example in this snapshot because finalists are explicitly paired with a Point72 mentor for a feedback session before the final presentation. JPMorganChase also assigns mentors throughout Innovate for Impact and ends with live presentations for teams that complete the curriculum. By contrast, the current BNY Sophomore Summit and Capital One Tech Summit pages describe project activity but do not promise individual written feedback or a score.

Do not convert silence into a promise. “Demos to leaders” means leaders see the work; it does not mean every student receives a review. “Case study” means you perform a case activity; it does not establish that the employer lets you keep or publish the case materials.

Choose the next route by the missing signal, not the employer logo

No work sample yet: start with the lowest-friction route that teaches a relevant task. Forage is immediate because its simulations are free, open access and self-paced. Treat the result as practice, then reproduce the method on your own nonconfidential data or problem so you can explain the work without leaning on a model answer.

Have practice but no external judgment: move to a live competition or challenge whose eligibility you meet. As of this snapshot, Crowe is still open through October 19 and Point72 through October 1. Citadel’s interest window has already closed, so it is not a new-entry option even though the current competition continues.

Need a real stakeholder and paid delivery: inspect current Parker Dewey projects and apply to one whose scope you can actually execute. A real client deadline creates a different kind of evidence than a simulation certificate. Do not claim the client’s business result unless you actually measured it.

Want employer context before a later internship: BNY Sophomore Summit says 2027 applications begin January 11, and Capital One’s recurring Tech Summit page points students toward its technology internship/development routes. JPMorganChase Innovate for Impact is currently closed, so use it as a model of the case-competition route rather than pretending it is open.

Already have judged work and stakeholder responsibility: stop collecting pre-internship programs. Apply for the first internship, apprenticeship, paid project or research role whose requirements you meet. The point of zero-to-one work is to cross the evidence gap, not to create an endless stack of certificates.

Keep the evidence, but do not publish material you do not own

After any route, record the problem, your role, the method, one decision you made, the result the organizer actually reported and any feedback you received. That is enough to prepare an interview story even when the underlying case, code or client file cannot be shared.

For a competition, save only material the rules allow you to retain and describe the submission accurately: “team stock-pitch competition,” “case competition finalist” or another literal label. For a summit, name the event and activity rather than inventing a job title. For a paid client project, ask before showing client inputs or final deliverables. For a simulation, name the platform and keep provider-supplied material separate from any independent extension you build afterward.

The public-source check for this dataset found no blanket portfolio-publication permission across the nine core routes. That absence is itself useful: a student should not infer permission from the fact that a PDF, model, code submission or slide deck was required. When permission is unclear, create a separate nonconfidential version that demonstrates the same skill without reproducing protected inputs.

Methodology and limits

Observation date: September 22, 2026. The cohort was selected to compare materially different zero-to-one routes with primary organizer or employer pages that describe the activity itself. It is not a ranking of employers and not a complete census of every student program.

OPEN means the primary page exposes a future application or registration cutoff. NEW ENTRY CLOSED means the current cycle continues but the entry window has passed. OPENS means a future opening date is published. RECURRING PAGE means the employer describes recurring months but the reviewed page does not tie them to one dated application cycle. OPEN ACCESS means no selection gate is described for participation. FINISHED means the reviewed edition has ended.

Payment coding is literal. A wage, paid project or paid internship is different from a prize, scholarship, travel reimbursement or free training. External judgment is also literal: formal judging, selection, mentor feedback, a scoring engine or a presentation to decision-makers counts only when the source states it. Portfolio permission remains NOT_STATED unless the reviewed source explicitly authorizes public use.

Recheck the organizer page before applying. Deadlines, eligibility and program mechanics can change after this observation date.
