Ten paid early-stage routes, checked September 22, 2026

This dataset uses a narrow inclusion rule. The organizer or employer must describe a real internship, fellowship or research appointment; the reviewed source must explicitly reach first-year, second-year, rising-sophomore or sophomore students; and the relationship must be paid through wages or a stated stipend. Summits, insight events, simulations and prize-only competitions are excluded even when they are selective.

Current status is literal. OPEN means the reviewed employer or program page exposes an application path now. OPENS means the next application opening is dated. RECURRING means the program page is current but the reviewed source does not publish one exact 2027 application cutoff. NO OPEN ROLE means the employer still describes the paid program but currently says there are no related jobs.

The table also separates a prior-internship rule from a broader experience floor. A student can have no prior internship and still fail a role that requires months of projects, laboratory work, programming or other applied experience.

The current queue is deadline-heavy before October

Two of the cleanest sophomore-only routes expire within days of this snapshot. MCB Real Estate lists September 25 for its paid eight-week Baltimore program. The New York Fed’s current sophomore postings use a September 28 deadline and a $65,600 annualized wage basis for the ten-week program. If either matches your field and eligibility, those applications belong ahead of undated rolling searches.

Visa, CME and both SpaceX families expose live application pages without one hard closing date in the reviewed source. That does not make them safe to postpone. A live requisition can disappear when the employer fills its slate. NREIP is different: the Office of Naval Research publishes a November 30 closing date for Summer 2027.

DOE SULI is a planned next-window route rather than an open Summer 2027 application today. The official key-dates page says the summer application opens October 14, 2026 and closes January 6, 2027 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern. A student who will satisfy the freshman credit rule by that deadline can prepare transcripts and recommendation requests before the portal opens.

No previous internship does not mean no evidence

CME is the clearest zero-to-one software route in this cohort because its employer posting says the fellowship is targeted toward rising sophomores and juniors who may not have previously held a software-engineering internship. That removes one common credential barrier, but it does not remove the need to show interest in technology, problem solving, communication and the program’s other qualifications.

SpaceX draws a useful opposite boundary. Its engineering internship requires at least three months of applied engineering experience, but explicitly allows laboratory work and personal or team projects to satisfy that requirement alongside internships. The software posting similarly requires applied programming/development experience. If you have never interned, a serious project can help you clear the evidence floor; a blank résumé cannot.

For the remaining routes, this dataset does not convert silence into a no-experience promise. NREIP selection considers academic achievement, recommendations and research interests. SULI imposes a completed-semester, STEM-credit and GPA floor. Visa has technical preferred qualifications. A sophomore program can still be selective and skill-specific.

Compare the compensation basis before comparing the number

Hourly wages, annualized salary figures and program stipends are not directly comparable without additional assumptions. This page therefore keeps each source’s published basis instead of manufacturing a single summer-pay ranking. Visa and SpaceX publish hourly rates; the New York Fed publishes an annual salary basis for a ten-week appointment; NREIP publishes a total ten-week stipend; SULI publishes a weekly stipend.

Funding can also change the real cost of participation. Capital One says corporate housing is provided. SULI offers qualifying travel reimbursement and laboratory-dependent housing support. SpaceX says a relocation stipend may be available. NREIP’s page gives the stipend amount but students should check the selected laboratory for site-specific logistics. MCB’s current page calls the internship paid but does not state a rate, so the table leaves the amount unknown.

All ten core rows are work relationships rather than simulations or selective events. That is the point of this dataset. If you need practice before you are competitive for them, use a simulation, project or competition honestly, then move on to an employment or research relationship when your evidence is strong enough.

Two plausible-looking records were excluded from the paid current cohort

Grey Rock is a useful 2027 early-stage internship and explicitly accepts freshmen, sophomores and juniors, but its reviewed employer page does not publish compensation. It therefore fails this page’s paid-evidence rule rather than being silently labeled paid.

Procter & Gamble’s R&D posting is even closer to the intended cohort: the job title explicitly names freshmen, sophomores and juniors and third-party mirrors still surface the former pay range. The employer page now says the job has been filled. It is excluded from the actionable core table because a stale search result is not a live application.

These exclusions matter because “freshman-friendly,” “internship” and “paid” are separate facts. Each row in the core table had to clear all three relevant evidence checks: academic-stage access, a real work relationship and employer/program evidence of compensation.

Methodology and limits

Observation date: September 22, 2026. This is a deliberately bounded sample of current or currently documented U.S.-relevant early-stage routes found through employer, government and program-primary pages. It is not a census of every paid internship that could accept a freshman or sophomore.

A route enters the core table only when the reviewed primary source supports three things: a real internship/fellowship/research relationship, explicit early-stage access, and paid status. If compensation is described only on a broader employer internship page, the table says so and does not invent a program-specific rate. If the current employer page says there is no open role, status is recorded as NO OPEN ROLE rather than OPEN.

Prior-experience coding is also literal. EXPLICIT_LOW_PRIOR_INTERNSHIP_BARRIER is reserved for a source that says students may lack a prior internship. PROJECT_EXPERIENCE_COUNTS means the source requires applied experience but names projects or laboratory work as valid evidence. NOT_STATED means the reviewed source does not publish a prior-internship rule; it does not mean experience is unnecessary.

Recheck every posting before applying. Rolling requisitions can close without notice, employer pay ranges can vary by location and experience, and program dates or eligibility can change after the observation date.
