Read the candidate and document requirements together
The ten-week program spans marine science, engineering and outreach. The reviewed page specifies the requirements below. Its mentor list mixes an older 2025 heading with 2026 exceptions, so next-cycle capacity needs confirmation. A numeric stipend or housing package is not established here.
| Item | Requirement described |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate route | Full-time enrollment, two college years completed, pursuing a four-year degree |
| Graduate route | Enrolled graduate students, or graduating seniors accepted and preregistered for graduate study |
| Age and standing | At least 18; good academic standing |
| Core packet | Application, résumé, one-page single-spaced essay and three faculty references |
| Transcript | Official transcript mailed in a sealed envelope |
| Other materials | Email attachments; references may be sent directly |
| International applicants | Separate visa, compensation-authorization and Social Security conditions apply |

Pick a research question rather than a favorite marine animal
Begin with the kind of work you want to do: interpreting environmental measurements, investigating a biological process, developing an instrument or communicating science. Those interests can lead to different projects even when they share a marine setting.
Write a paragraph connecting a question to your preparation. An engineering student might explain a sensor or signal-processing project; a biology student might discuss an experiment and the uncertainty it exposed; a communication student might explain how they made a research topic understandable to a particular audience. The connection should be concrete enough that a mentor could identify a starting task.
Avoid describing every research theme on the website as equally exciting. Choose a primary direction and a related alternative, then explain what you want to learn in each. You do not need to arrive with a completed proposal, but the application should tell a reviewer more than that you enjoy the ocean.
Use the mentor list as research, not as a reservation
Read the public description of a potential mentor’s work and identify the methods or questions that connect to your interests. Keep your notes about subject fit separate from confirmation that the person is taking an intern in the relevant cycle.
When the program’s current instructions invite contact, write a short question that names the research connection and your availability. Do not tell the program you have secured a mentor because someone replied encouragingly. Interest, capacity and a formal appointment are different stages.
A useful research note has four fields: project theme, method I have used, method I would need to learn and question to clarify. For example, experience processing images might be relevant to a biological observation problem, but it does not establish that you know how the images were collected or what an observation represents. This gives a mentor a realistic view of your starting skills.
Make a short essay explain your reasoning
Use the page limit as a reason to choose evidence, not shrink the font. Start with the research direction and why it interests you. Use the middle of the essay for one or two experiences that show how you work, then explain what you hope to learn in the placement.
A strong experience paragraph names a question, your responsibility and a result or revision. “I analyzed water-quality data” is a starting description. Explaining that you checked inconsistent units before comparing sites, discovered that missing measurements affected the initial pattern and revised the summary shows the reasoning behind the task. Use that example only when it is true of your work.
Keep an ambitious interest separate from a claim of expertise. You can want to study an unfamiliar marine process while honestly explaining the quantitative or laboratory foundation you would bring. Ask someone outside your immediate course to read the essay and identify your main research interest. If they cannot, the document may contain too many disconnected topics.
Treat the packet as several dependent submissions
Create a checklist with an owner and status for each required item. An official transcript request is not proof that the transcript arrived, and a recommender’s agreement is not a submitted letter. These distinctions matter when different parts of an application travel through different channels.
Ask references early enough for them to discuss your actual work. Supply the program description, relevant experiences they observed and the current submission instructions. Avoid choosing a recognizable name who cannot say anything specific about how you investigate, write or collaborate.
Do not send sensitive documents based on a stale copied email or an address guessed from a search result. Reopen the official instructions for the relevant cycle and confirm the recipient and format. Where the program allows a referee to submit directly, respect that process rather than requesting access to a confidential letter. Build your personal target around the slowest dependency, not just the time needed to write the essay.
Resolve the assignment and costs before committing
Ask about the actual project, supervision, start and end dates, stipend and accommodation when a new cycle or offer provides them. A funded program description does not by itself supply the cash amount or the date it will be paid. Keep travel and move-in expenses visible in your decision.
Compare potential projects by the work you would do repeatedly. A marine research placement may involve analysis, documentation or laboratory work rather than a summer of field trips. Ask what a successful final output looks like and how feedback occurs during the project.
Until new dates are published, prepare the reusable evidence and investigate alternatives rather than announcing that you have found an open 2027 seat. The goal is a research assignment that fits your preparation and lets you develop a specific capability. That is a stronger basis for the application than the setting alone.
