What JAX has announced for 2027

At the September 16, 2026 review, the application is forthcoming, not open. The program overview names undergraduate students and graduating high-school seniors as its audience. Full eligibility must be checked in the current application; this summary does not infer a citizenship, GPA or minimum-age rule.

Check the academic calendar before writing the application

The admissions page describes 40 hours weekly, attendance for the full program and no concurrent job, internship or summer classes. It encourages applicants with some calendar conflicts to discuss them, while warning that substantial conflicts can make another year more appropriate. Saved application work must be formally submitted, and unsolicited supplemental material is not permitted.

Explain what you want to investigate, not just which disease interests you

Begin your preparation with a research question you can discuss in ordinary language. “I am interested in cancer” describes a subject. A stronger starting point explains which biological relationship, measurement or computational problem you want to understand and why you are curious about it. You need not already have a fundable proposal.

Read a public research description and identify what is known, what the researchers are testing and what evidence they use. Write a short note separating those three elements. This prevents an application paragraph from repeating a laboratory’s mission statement without showing that you understood any of its work.

Use one real experience to demonstrate how you handle uncertainty. A course experiment that did not work can be useful when you explain the observation, what you checked and what you changed. A résumé filled with technique names leaves the reviewer to guess whether you understand them. A specific debugging or interpretation decision makes your contribution easier to assess.

Choose the research contribution you want to develop

A computational interest should explain the biological question as well as the tools. Writing Python is a starting capability; the research value depends on what the records mean, whether observations are comparable and how the analysis addresses the question. A wet-laboratory interest should similarly explain why the method is informative rather than only naming equipment.

For an independent preparation exercise, choose a permitted public dataset or an entirely fictional table. Write its data dictionary and identify which rows represent independent observations. You could demonstrate that repeated measurements are not independent people or specimens. Keep that example separate from any claim about an actual disease or treatment.

Bring the same discipline to reading papers. Distinguish a result in one experimental setting from a conclusion about patients. The application should show that you can learn from evidence, not that you can make the largest possible claim from it. Follow the actual prompt when the portal opens instead of sending this preparation note as an unsolicited attachment.

Compare the stipend with the costs you would actually bear

As a planning calculation, $7,500 divided over ten weeks averages $750 per program week. That does not establish a weekly payroll schedule, take-home amount or an hourly wage. The published support package should be evaluated separately from cash-payment timing.

Suppose, in a fictional comparison, another internship pays $9,000 but leaves you $3,000 of summer housing costs, while a research program supplies housing separately from a $7,500 stipend. Looking only at $9,000 versus $7,500 would miss an important cost. You would still need food, travel, payment timing and personal expenses before comparing the complete arrangements. This is a method for comparing offers, not an estimate of either employer’s final package.

Ask the program how travel is arranged and when funds become available before paying for nonrefundable plans. Also consider what you give up: the full-time commitment means this cannot be budgeted as an addition to a simultaneous paid internship. A feasible plan should cover the whole period without depending on outside work the program does not allow.

Prepare the reusable work now and submit to the actual prompt later

Create a concise record of your projects, responsibilities, relevant courses and examples of teamwork. For each research experience, distinguish the question, your task, the method, the result and an unresolved limitation. These notes let you answer the application in your own words when its questions become available.

Ask a potential recommender whether they can speak concretely about your work, and provide the official program information once the current requirements are visible. Do not invent a required reference count from another research program. The same principle applies to essays: prepare experiences and ideas, then answer the actual questions and follow the program’s authorship rules.

Make an earlier personal submission target and retain the published 5 p.m. Eastern cutoff separately. Check that the portal records a submission, not merely a saved draft. Keep alternative research applications moving until an offer and its conditions are confirmed. The goal is a summer in which you can sustain the research work, not merely win a place whose calendar you cannot attend.
