Start with the Board, not a generic Federal Reserve search.

The Federal Reserve Board and the regional Reserve Banks use distinct recruiting routes. This guide covers the Board’s program. Its March 2026 overview supplies recurring program terms, but this review did not validate an individual Summer 2027 requisition. Use the official search link and select the Intern Group category to find the actual roles.

Choose a work product before choosing a division.

Separate the work you would like to try into two or three concrete tasks. An economics applicant might want to construct a reliable comparison from messy time-series data. A finance applicant might prefer investigating an unexplained difference in a management report. A technical applicant might want to improve the reliability of an internal process. These are suggested search lenses, not a promise that any particular assignment is available.

Read a posting for its verbs and outputs. “Analyze” could mean cleaning records, implementing a statistical method, checking a published figure or drafting an explanation for somebody else. Identify which of those tasks your existing work supports. A course title establishes exposure to a subject; an explained project shows what you can do with it.

Build a short requirement-to-evidence map. For each essential requirement, name the project, course or job that supports it and the file or example you can discuss. For a preferred skill you have not used, record the gap rather than turning familiarity with the concept into a proficiency claim. This map should make the application shorter and more specific, not become an extra document the employer never requested.

Prepare the documents around the actual posting.

The Board says resumes and transcripts are commonly required; additional materials can include a cover letter, writing sample or references. Its overview describes fall interviews and offers generally finalized by December. Treat that sequence as recurring guidance, not a guaranteed response schedule for your application.

Create one document checklist per role. Put the requested file beside the requirement it satisfies, and verify the uploaded version rather than only the file on your laptop. A transcript should make the institution and completed coursework clear. A project sample should explain your contribution. Where a document is optional, include it only when it supplies relevant evidence instead of repeating the resume. A small, complete application is preferable to a large folder that misses one required attachment.

Practice explaining a change in an index.

Original preparation exercise: a fictional price index rises from 100 to 108 in one year, then to 111 the next. A draft says inflation rose from 8% to 11%. Rewrite it and show your calculation. This is not a Board interview question, and the numbers describe no real economy.

Fictional index: level and growth are different
PeriodIndex levelGrowth since preceding observation
Start100Not applicable
Year 11088.00%
Year 21112.78%

The first annual increase is 8%. The second is (111/108 − 1) × 100, approximately 2.78%. The level is 11% above the original starting point, but that is the cumulative change over two years. Prices rose in both years while the rate of increase slowed. A reader needs both the denominator and the time interval to understand the result.

A useful correction is: “The fictional index increased 2.78% in the second year, after an 8% increase in the first; it finished 11% above its initial level.” Then label the series, units and period on the table. Add one limitation: three index values do not explain which categories changed or what caused the movement.

For a stronger independent extension, take an allowed public series, record the download date and recreate one small comparison. Explain whether your figures are monthly or annual, adjusted or unadjusted, and whether later revisions could affect the result. The purpose is an inspectable calculation and a clear sentence, not an elaborate dashboard. A reviewer should be able to reproduce the result without trusting your chart.

Resolve the student-status rule before spending hours tailoring.

A student finishing a degree immediately before the internship should check the returning-student condition first. Admission to a later program may or may not satisfy the exact role’s wording; explain your dates to the listed recruiting contact rather than making that determination yourself. Likewise, an expected graduation year is not a substitute for the actual enrollment requirement.

Role-fit note for your own preparation

Board posting title / identifier: Required enrollment after the internship: Three tasks in the posting: My best evidence for each task: One unresolved qualification: Documents required: Employer deadline and stated timezone: My earlier submission target:

Once eligibility is clear, choose the strongest relevant evidence rather than attach everything. A readable two-page project explanation can show more than an unfocused folder of files. Where no writing sample is requested, use the work to improve your resume and interview preparation instead of forcing it into the application.

Before accepting any offer, record the confirmed work dates, rate, hours and location. Do not assume a relocation payment or housing provision from the fact that the program is paid. Compare those terms with your academic calendar and other commitments. Your immediate action is a role-specific application with the required documents, not a generic expression of interest in the Federal Reserve.
