Choose the right entry route before preparing a reel

The distinctions below come from official program pages checked September 16, 2026. Application dates belong to a particular intake and country; use the current requisition for a final eligibility check.

Recurring student program

Warner Bros. Discovery: U.S. internships

The U.S. overview requires enrollment throughout the internship, rising-junior, senior or graduate status, age 18 or older and a 3.0 GPA. Most placements are hybrid, with some fully in person. Its calendar describes part-time spring/fall work and full-time summer work.

Who this may suit: Start here for development, production, distribution, marketing and corporate roles, then select a department.

Program reference; current intake unconfirmed

NBCUniversal MediaTech

A paid Operations & Technology route for associate, bachelor's and graduate students, generally from sophomore level with 30 credits. Locations listed include New York, Los Angeles, Dry Creek and Stamford. The page retains closed-cycle language, so its calendar is not a verified open 2027 application.

Who this may suit: Useful for technical and operational interests. A film-school reel alone may not demonstrate the required technical work.

Graduate alternative—not an internship

NBCUniversal Page Program

A full-time 12–16-month program for people who have completed a bachelor's degree, based in New York or Universal City. It combines assignments across parts of the business.

Who this may suit: A separate route to investigate after graduation instead of applying to an enrollment-required internship.

Spring recruiting can matter more than waiting for summer

WBD's U.S. calendar places spring applications in September–October, summer applications in January–February and fall applications in May–June. It describes 16–24 weekly hours for spring/fall and 35–40 for summer. These recurring windows help plan a search; they are not one closing date for every team. Its U.S. work-authorization terms also need checking before applying.

Use a concrete availability statement: your start and end dates, weekly hours and location. A spring placement that conflicts with classes is not a fit simply because it is part-time. For a graduate route, compare the much longer Page Program commitment with a summer internship rather than treating the two as equivalent offers.

Development, production and audience work need different evidence

Select the sample requested by the posting. This editorial comparison gives you a starting point when the employer allows additional work; it does not establish a universal application requirement.

Match the sample to the assignment
FunctionUseful sampleWhat the reviewer should learn
DevelopmentShort coverage memoCan you summarize a story and identify a specific problem without confusing the two?
Production coordinationSchedule, dependency list and change messageCan you keep people working from the same revised plan?
Post-production or creativeRelevant permitted reel or finished workWhat did you personally make, and can you explain the edit or design choices?
Distribution or marketingAudience brief and release-information reviewCan you explain who the work is for and how they decide to watch?
TechnologyDocumented technical projectCan you build, test and explain the system named in the role?

What a useful development note actually sounds like

This original example uses an invented premise so you can see the distinction between plot and assessment. Replace it with permitted material and the employer's requested format when completing an application.

Short coverage example

Premise: a museum guard discovers that a scheduled transfer will remove the object needed to clear a colleague's name. Stopping it would expose an earlier mistake the guard concealed. Assessment: the guard's responsibility for the earlier mistake gives the story a personal cost. The weak point is the connection between the object and the accusation: at present, the audience must accept that the object proves innocence without understanding why. I would ask for a revision that establishes that connection before the transfer becomes urgent. That would make the final choice easier to follow without adding another subplot. Discussion question: does the guard confess because it is right, or only because there is no other route to saving the colleague? The answer changes the ending's effect.

Put the role, evidence and schedule in the application

A concise introduction should identify the department and connect one real project to a stated responsibility. For development, describe a revision that improved a piece of writing. For coordination, explain how you handled a changed schedule. For technology, link a project the reviewer can inspect without private credentials. Explain your contribution to team work in a sentence.

Ask the recruiter only for the unresolved fact that could change your application: required student status, days onsite, assessment format or whether a sample is requested. Before accepting, ask who reviews the intern's work and which assignments are likely to be completed during the placement. Studio access and a recognizable brand are not a substitute for knowing the job you are taking.
