Find human resources roles
Search for “human resources intern,” “recruiting intern” or “people operations intern.” Match your example to the assignment: scheduling, reliable records, clear instructions or checked data.
Before preparing an application, check degree level, location and whether the placement pays wages or offers college credit. The official examples below show different arrangements; check the current posting rather than assuming they share the same terms.
Which part of HR would you work in?
HR work can include recruiting, employee records, training and benefits. An internship usually supports a narrower process. Ask what you would produce, not just whether you would get exposure to HR.
Choose evidence that matches the assignment
| Function | Work to ask about | Evidence to discuss |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiting coordination | Scheduling interviews and keeping candidates informed | A real scheduling conflict you resolved and the message you sent |
| People operations | Onboarding tasks, records and approvals | A checklist showing dependencies, not just due dates |
| Learning and development | Training materials and instructions | A short guide you revised after someone used it |
| People analytics | Reporting on a defined process | A calculation that keeps pending and missing records separate |

Check program requirements
Screen these requirements before applying
These official examples illustrate three different arrangements. The program pages are search routes; the Ability Beyond entry is a specific Fall 2026 posting. Read the current requisition before applying.
HR routes are not all undergraduate, paid summer internships
| Route | What the source says | What that means for your search |
|---|---|---|
| GE Aerospace U.S. HR | Master's-level business or HR-related study; Evendale, Ohio | Do not treat this graduate route as an undergraduate opening |
| Caterpillar part-time student program | Four-year university; full-time enrollment of 12 semester hours; 12 completed credits; commuting distance; GPA 2.8 or 3.0 by function, without rounding | Check the HR-specific GPA and facility. Transfer students need 12 completed credits at the four-year institution |
| Ability Beyond HR Recruiting Intern | Fall 2026; unpaid, college credit only; enrolled students; hybrid with 1–2 days in Bethel, Connecticut | It does not supply wages. Obtain your school's credit approval separately |
Work through the onboarding example
Find the person who can remove the block
The worked onboarding case below has a Monday starter whose account is not ready. Sending another reminder to the coordinator will not help if IT is waiting for a manager's access approval.
Good coordination identifies the dependency and asks the right person for a decision. It also gives the supervisor a fallback when a task will miss its deadline. The exercise includes a complete internal message you can compare with your own answer.
Practice an HR reporting calculation
Ten incomplete interviews do not mean ten rejections
In a fictional recruiting report, 40 applicants receive a screening invitation and 30 complete the screen. Completion is 30 ÷ 40 = 75%. The other ten might be scheduled, withdrawn or missing a status; the numbers alone do not tell you.
Report the stage and cutoff date, then investigate the unresolved records. Do not label every person who has not reached the next stage as rejected. This distinction makes a small spreadsheet more useful than a polished funnel with incorrect categories.
For a public work sample, use invented candidate records. A real hiring dataset should remain in the employer's approved systems.
Prepare your application and offer questions
Replace a personality claim with something you did
Instead of saying you are a people person, describe the task: coordinating a volunteer rota, correcting attendance records or rewriting instructions after repeated questions. Explain your action and what changed. Use actual experience; the exercises here are practice, not employment history.
At interview, ask: What would you expect me to own in the first month, and which messages or records need review? Then confirm the work hours and pay or credit arrangement. Those answers tell you more about the placement than the phrase strategic HR.
