Current status: May 2027, application route not yet reopened

Jane Street’s detailed IN FOCUS page says the program dates are moving to May 2027 and that applications will reopen later. That is the safest current planning state.

There is one official-surface conflict. Jane Street’s broader Programs and Events index labels IN FOCUS “Accepting Applications,” while the detailed IN FOCUS page says applications will re-open later. Until a current application route is exposed on the detailed page, treat the program as announced for May 2027 but not yet confirmed open for applications.

Older listings that show January dates or a past deadline should not drive a 2027 plan.

Who is eligible — and the current source conflict

Jane Street describes IN FOCUS as a program for students who have experienced barriers to advanced STEM educational opportunities. Its examples include being first-generation, identifying with an underrepresented ethnic or racial minority group, being Pell Grant eligible, having significant financial need, attending an under-resourced or rural school, coming from a marginalized community, or experiencing personal hardship. Jane Street says the list is not exhaustive.

The current page is internally inconsistent about academic level. The introduction says undergraduate and graduate students are invited, and the Programs and Events index also describes undergraduates and graduate students. But the participation footnote on the detailed IN FOCUS page says a participant must be a current undergraduate student.

Current undergraduate eligibility is therefore confirmed by the most specific participation note. Graduate students should ask Jane Street to confirm eligibility before relying on the broader introductory wording. FOCUS is a separate first-year university program.

Choose the track by the work you want to test

Trading and research covers probability, market structure and arbitrage through lectures, group games and mock trading. Choose it if you want to test mathematical decision-making under uncertainty.

Which IN FOCUS track best matches the question you want answered?
TrackWhat Jane Street says you will work onA useful self-test before applying
Trading and researchProbability, market structure, arbitrage, games and mock tradingDo I enjoy making decisions with incomplete information and explaining the assumptions?
Software engineeringOCaml, internal tools, electronic-trading systems, game and simulated-exchange buildsDo I enjoy turning a specification into working code and debugging what breaks?
Strategy and productCross-department cases across treasury, compliance, operations, trading and technologyDo I enjoy structuring an ambiguous problem, identifying stakeholders and deciding what information matters?

Software engineering covers OCaml, internal libraries and tools, electronic-trading systems, a computer game and a simulated-exchange trading program. Choose it if you want to test whether you enjoy building and debugging systems around concrete constraints.

Strategy and product uses cases and problem-solving exercises across treasury, compliance, operations, trading desks and technology groups. Choose it if you want to test whether you enjoy structuring ambiguous cross-functional problems.

You do not need finance experience

Jane Street explicitly says IN FOCUS does not require prior knowledge of finance. Do not manufacture a finance résumé. Use evidence that you learn hard things, solve problems carefully and can explain why one of the tracks is the right place for you to learn next.

For trading, evidence can come from probability, math, data analysis, games or another problem where you reasoned under uncertainty. For software engineering, use a program, debugging example or system you built. For strategy and product, use a case competition, campus project, research problem or operations task where you had to structure an unclear problem.

The evidence does not need to come from an internship.

Jane Street covers program costs, but that is not salary

Jane Street says it covers travel to and from IN FOCUS, meals, housing and social events, plus a set daily amount for other program-related expenses.

Do not convert that daily amount into a salary claim. The detailed page does not describe IN FOCUS as employment and does not currently publish the amount.

Do not infer an assessment or interview sequence

The current IN FOCUS page does not publish a 2027 assessment or interview sequence. Older student discussions and third-party listings are not enough to make an old HackerRank, probability assessment, interview count or response timeline a current requirement.

Before applications reopen, pick a provisional track, choose one proof point from work you have actually done, sign up for program notifications if useful, and keep checking the detailed IN FOCUS page. Recheck eligibility when the application opens because the undergraduate-vs-graduate wording conflict may be resolved.

FOCUS, IN FOCUS, FTTP/INSIGHT and AMP are different programs

FOCUS is a separate multi-day program for first-year university students who have experienced barriers to advanced STEM opportunities. IN FOCUS is the program in this guide and has trading/research, software engineering and strategy/product tracks.

Use the existing InternshipDeadlines FTTP/INSIGHT guide for those programs. AMP is a five-week summer program for recent high-school graduates interested in math and computer science.

Do not treat any of these names as interchangeable or create track-specific IN FOCUS canonicals while they share one application journey.
