Start here: Spring 2027 applications open November 2, and the placement is unpaid

NARA's current program page says applications for Spring 2027 open on November 2, 2026. It does not list a Spring 2027 closing date. Build your documents before the opening, then use the date that appears on the current official call rather than inventing a deadline from an older term.

The program is explicitly unpaid. NARA says a voluntary internship may be completed for academic credit or a school's internship requirement, but credit is not compensation and does not make the placement a paid federal job.

Do not treat this route as interchangeable with Pathways or assume a voluntary placement converts into federal employment. The current page describes a separate volunteer internship process.

Prepare the required documents around the actual assignment

NARA requires an application form, cover letter, resume of no more than two pages and an unofficial transcript that shows GPA. Some opportunities can request a recommendation, writing sample or references later if you are selected for an interview.

The program lists work across archival processing, business, communications, conservation, digitization, IT, legal, public history, records management and other functions. Read the actual assignment before choosing your example. A records role calls for different evidence than a communications or public-program role.

If selected, applicants must verify U.S. citizenship and complete the background check before a final offer. Submit sensitive information only through the authorized process.

Decide whether the unpaid and onsite structure is workable before investing heavily

Put the likely commute, meals and any housing cost next to the unpaid status before treating the placement as feasible. Then add the paid work or class time you would have to give up. Do not assign a speculative future salary gain to make an unaffordable semester look workable.

NARA says schedules are set collaboratively with supervisors, but the program still requires at least 100 hours and at least half the time onsite. Check the actual facility and proposed weekly schedule against your classes before you accept.

If academic credit matters, ask your school what approval is required. NARA's willingness to support credit does not establish that your institution will award it automatically.
