Check enrollment for the whole internship, not only today.

The OECD guidance reviewed September 16, 2026 accepts applications on a rolling basis. It requires enrollment in an eligible full-time degree throughout the internship and excludes the online/non-degree formats described in its footnote. A student expecting to graduate before the proposed end should resolve that issue before making plans.

Make IEA selection deliberate in the OECD application.

IEA’s instructions direct applicants to select IEA among their three interest areas and explain the desired role and work area in the Message to Hiring Manager. They recommend applying at least three months before the desired start. That is planning guidance, not a universal closing date or a promised selection timeline.

Prepare one policy question you can investigate responsibly.

For an energy-focused application, choose a question narrow enough to answer with the evidence you have. A comparison of household electricity use requires definitions of the household population, period and unit. A comparison of supply technologies requires boundaries for cost, availability and system needs. Do not use a fashionable topic as a substitute for an analytical question.

Read a relevant public output, then identify the kind of work behind it: reconciling units, assembling a country comparison, checking a source or explaining a scenario. Select one real project showing a related habit. Your contribution may have been cleaning input data or improving a memo; it does not need to be an original national-policy recommendation.

A strong application distinguishes interest from expertise. State the methods you have actually used and one you hope to learn. Explain how a supervisor could use the output you can produce. That gives the hiring team a concrete view of your preparation instead of a claim that you are passionate about every area of international cooperation.

Convert units before ranking the observations.

This original fictional energy-data exercise is not an OECD or IEA assessment. A town reports 120 MWh of monthly electricity consumption across 100 metered households. Another reports 90,000 kWh across 60. Which has lower reported consumption per metered household, and what would be wrong with comparing 120 directly with 90,000?

Convert 120 MWh to 120,000 kWh. The first town reports 1,200 kWh per metered household; the second reports 1,500. The first has lower consumption on that defined measure despite higher total consumption. Comparing the raw totals without harmonizing units would reverse the scale of the problem.

The result is not evidence that the first town is more efficient. Household size, climate, heating technology, meter coverage and the reporting period could differ. State which of these inputs would be needed to support a stronger interpretation. Missing coverage data should remain missing instead of being filled with an assumed average.

Create a four-column working file: reported value, original unit, conversion rule and harmonized measure. Keep the original input visible so a reviewer can trace the result. A reliable small comparison is a useful application example precisely because its interpretation does not outrun its data.

Put the proposed start, enrollment and costs on one page.

Build a schedule that includes university enrollment, exams and the requested placement period. Avoid offering dates that depend on an exception nobody has approved. A remote or part-time arrangement should be confirmed for the actual role rather than inferred from the general existence of flexible arrangements.

OECD/IEA application note

Proposed start/end: Eligible degree enrollment throughout: IEA or other selected area: Specific work question: One relevant project and my role: Languages and evidence: Monthly confirmed support versus costs: Unresolved location or schedule condition: Application confirmation:

For a hypothetical three-month Paris placement, a €1,000 monthly contribution would total €3,000 if all three months qualify in full. That is a scenario using the published rate, not your offer. Compare it with researched housing, travel, insurance and deposit requirements; do not label the difference as zero before obtaining those costs.

The application’s purpose is to make your availability and contribution clear. Give the team a focused interest, evidence and feasible dates. Keep a copy of the submission and update the availability through the employer’s process when circumstances change. Do not treat being in an applicant pool as a confirmed assignment.
