Read the invitation before pressing Start

Confirm the employer and role through the official application process. Note the deadline and timezone, whether opening the link starts a timer, and whether practice questions are separate from assessed answers. Check permitted notes, tools and assistance; preparation is not permission to use undisclosed live coaching.

Do a playback test, not just a device check

Record 20 seconds using the same device and location. Play it back: can you hear each word, and is the intended microphone actually recording? A wireless microphone can be connected while an application still uses the laptop or phone microphone.

Put the camera at a comfortable height, light your face and silence notifications. Plug in power and close applications you do not need. You do not need to buy a studio setup; understandable speech and a stable picture are the goal.

Practice finishing before the time runs out

Berkeley recommends interview practice. For this format, rehearse a real example with a timer, then listen for background that could be cut.

For a practice answer of 90 seconds, try roughly 20 seconds for context and responsibility, 50 for your action and 20 for the outcome. This is a rehearsal exercise, not a platform rule; use the actual limit in your invitation.

Prompt: 'Tell me about a time you learned something to finish a task.' Name the task first, explain how you learned the missing skill and say what you produced. End when you have answered. You do not need to fill every remaining second.

If the platform fails or you need an adjustment

Find the support contact before starting. If an error occurs, record the time, question or step affected and exact error message. Capture the error without sharing protected assessment questions. Do not create another account or repeatedly restart unless support instructs you to.

Support message: 'My [role/job ID] assessment stopped at [step] at [time and timezone] with [error]. The deadline is [date and timezone]. Could you confirm whether my response was received and advise how to complete the assessment?'

If a disability creates an assessment barrier, contact the employer's accommodation process early. EEOC guidance covers reasonable adjustments in covered hiring circumstances. Describe the barrier and requested adjustment; do not assume the only solution is to struggle through the standard format.

Check that the assessment was submitted

Complete the final step and retain the confirmation available to you. A finished recording is not necessarily a submitted assessment. Once submission is confirmed, note one preparation improvement for next time and leave minor phrasing imperfections alone.
