The public application is still the completed 2026 cycle
Rockefeller’s application instructions and online application system still publish a February 1, 2026 deadline. Treat that as historical. Do not convert it into a 2027 date or interpret a working registration page as a new application cycle.
| Question | Published answer |
|---|---|
| Current application cycle | Public instructions and portal still show the completed 2026 cycle; no 2027 deadline confirmed |
| Student stage | College sophomores and juniors in the life or physical sciences |
| International applicants | Eligible to apply |
| Laboratory placement | Centralized through the Dean’s Office; students state interests or laboratory preferences |
| 2026 program dates | June 1–August 7, 2026 — historical, not a 2027 schedule |
| 2026 support | $6,500 for ten weeks; free housing for students unable to commute — historical until a new cycle confirms terms |
The standing program description says SURF lasts ten weeks and accepts college sophomores and juniors in the life or physical sciences. International students are eligible. Rockefeller centrally matches accepted students to laboratories according to research interests; applicants are neither expected nor encouraged to arrange their own lab placement.
The last published file requires a two-page statement, official transcripts and two recommendations
The last published application asks for a personal statement of no more than two single-spaced pages describing academic background, scientific interests, research experience if any, career goals, what you would contribute to SURF and how you would benefit. The portal also requires an official transcript from each college or university listed; it explicitly says unofficial transcripts are not accepted.
Two recommendation letters are required, preferably from professors or mentors who can evaluate your work in a lab course or research setting. Choose writers for specific evidence they observed rather than title alone. Keep transcript requests and recommendation requests as separate completion checks.
Write for centralized matching rather than pretending you already have a project
Rockefeller asks applicants to state research interests or preferred laboratories but does not guarantee a specific placement. Make the statement useful for matching: identify a scientific question or method you want to learn, connect it to evidence from coursework or research, and explain why a Rockefeller research area fits that next step.
Do not invent a proposed Rockefeller project or claim a laboratory commitment you do not have. If a paragraph would work unchanged for any research university, replace prestige language with a concrete scientific reason for the preference.
Use the 2026 stipend and housing terms only as a planning reference
Rockefeller currently lists a $6,500 stipend and free housing for students who cannot commute, but those figures sit beside the completed 2026 schedule. Treat them as last-published terms until Rockefeller posts a new cycle.
The program includes laboratory work, weekly journal club, faculty lectures and a final poster session. Before accepting a future offer, verify the new program dates, stipend, housing window and travel responsibilities together rather than assuming the prior package carries forward.
