Start with competitions you can actually enter

Several current programs illustrate why the access route matters more than the label “case competition.” Check the official page again immediately before registering because deadlines, eligibility and event terms change.

Crowe is a direct employer competition with a live fall registration window. MMSI uses a team application and fee. Cornhusker accepts undergraduate teams and makes visiting teams responsible for hotel and travel. Deloitte’s national 2026 competition has concluded and directs students to campus career centers or school recruiters for future participation.

Classify the entry route before you form a team

Case competitions use different gates. Direct registration lets an eligible student or team register without first winning a campus nomination. Application-and-selection competitions ask the team to submit material before it is admitted. School-mediated or invitational routes depend on a campus, club, career center or employer school recruiter.

Before recruiting teammates, write down five facts: who can submit, whether every teammate must meet the rule, team size, submission deadline and whether the event requires travel. A team that is excellent at analysis but cannot satisfy the entry route is not a usable option.

Compare the real cost in time and money

Do not compare competitions only by sponsor name or prize money. Calculate the commitment that lands on your calendar. A selection deliverable can consume substantial time before you know whether you will compete, and an in-person final can be expensive even when registration is free.

Questions to answer before entering
DecisionWhat to verifyWhy it changes the choice
Entry workIs registration enough, or is a memo/deck/one-pager already required?A selection deliverable can consume substantial time before admission.
Team constraintFixed team size? Same university? Same class year?A strong teammate who fails the program rule can invalidate the entry.
Competition windowHours, days or multiple rounds? It can collide with classes, recruiting interviews and exams.
TravelWho pays for flights, hotel and local transport? An in-person final can be expensive even when registration is free.
FeeApplication or registration fee? Refundable?Programs use different payment terms.
OutputDeck, memo, model, live presentation or Q&A?Choose a format that helps you practice the work you want to improve.
FeedbackJudges, mentors, written scores, networking? The learning value differs even when prize money is similar.

Cornhusker makes the travel trade-off explicit: visiting teams are responsible for hotel and travel accommodations. MMSI’s current application fee is $30 per team and functions as conference admission for the applying team. Read the exact terms rather than assuming every fee buys the same thing.

Build the team around the work, not titles

A case team does not need four invented executive titles. It needs coverage of the work before the deadline: problem framing, evidence and research, quantitative checks, recommendation/deck logic, and presentation/challenge.

A useful 90-minute kickoff is to restate the decision and constraints, assign the few facts and calculations you need first, generate two or three plausible options, compare them using the same criteria, then choose a working recommendation and list unresolved evidence gaps. This is a planning exercise, not a claim about any competition’s judging rubric. The actual rules control.

Make the recommendation falsifiable

A weak case deck often hides the decision under research. Put the recommendation into one sentence that can be challenged, then show the inputs behind it. If the case packet does not provide a number, label the assumption and test a range rather than turning a guess into a sourced fact.

Before finalizing, ask what fact could reverse the recommendation, which assumption has the widest plausible range, whether the implementation plan solves the stated constraint, and whether a judge can trace each important number to the case packet, an allowed public source or a clearly labeled assumption.

Use the competition as evidence without calling it an internship

A case competition can give you material for a resume, interview or portfolio when you describe the actual work. It is not an internship and it is not client work unless the program explicitly created that relationship. Name the competition, your team role and the analysis or presentation you actually completed.

Add finalist status, placement, prize money or employer selection only if it actually happened. Continue the internship search in parallel. A competition may create evidence and conversation material, but it does not change an employer’s graduation window, work-authorization rule, skill requirement or application deadline.
