Look for actual business-function evidence
NextEra's Finance/Accounting internship description names several possible finance assignments. Dominion's Power Contracts and Origination internship describes exposure to bidding, agreements and contract administration. These are specific examples of business-oriented work; they do not establish that every office or program offers the same assignment.
Keep these roles separate from graduate leadership-development programs and experienced positions. A list of functions on a careers homepage is not a list of internships currently open. Follow the exact employer posting and check its candidate stage, location and dates before applying.
Distinguish a proposed project from an operating asset
For preparation, a project-development question concerns whether and how a proposed project could proceed. An operating-asset question concerns the performance, cost and obligations of something already running. Both can involve finance and contracts, but their inputs and uncertainties differ.
| Stage | Preparation question | Useful output |
|---|---|---|
| Development | What assumptions and dependencies must hold before proceeding? | Scenario and dependency table |
| Execution | Which milestone or cost variance needs attention? | Plan-versus-actual report with owners and dates |
| Operations | What explains performance against plan? | Reconciled variance and exception analysis |
Ask whether the internship supports a new project, construction, an operating business or corporate reporting. Do not assume that project management means engineering design or that asset management means investment portfolio management. The task and deliverable must settle the meaning.
Build a milestone-and-cost exercise
Create a fictional project with three milestones and a $100,000 budget. Suppose recorded costs are $20,000, $35,000 and $25,000, while a final $30,000 commitment remains. Costs incurred total $80,000, but the simple incurred-plus-commitment view is $110,000. Do not report a $20,000 saving merely because the last invoice has not arrived.
The $110,000 figure is still not a full forecast if commitments overlap recorded costs or more work remains. Define what each amount includes and prevent double counting. Add a field for evidence, owner and unresolved scope. A student project can demonstrate this discipline without claiming to manage a real construction budget.
Check location and support at the role level
Utility internships may be tied to an office, project or operating site. Confirm the actual location and schedule rather than using a company's headquarters as a proxy. Dominion's student page describes a housing stipend subject to qualification; that wording is not a guarantee for every intern.
Ask whether a benefit is a stipend, direct booking or reimbursement, and when it is available. Do not make a nonrefundable housing commitment based on a broad benefits page. A role can be paid and still create an upfront cash gap. Keep that feasibility question separate from the attractiveness of the work.

Use a function-specific work sample
For finance, build a budget or cash exercise and explain the definitions. For contracts, prepare a nonlegal comparison of fictional commercial terms and unresolved questions. For project coordination, build a milestone log that separates a target date from a confirmed obligation. Do not present a practice document as legal or engineering advice.
When reading postings, look for the degree field, expected coursework, required software and actual work verbs. Then explain one example of careful analysis, documentation or coordination from your own experience. The aim is a credible match to a specific function, not an application that merely says you are interested in energy.
