Choose the output you would like to own
Read a vacancy's verbs. Designing, characterizing, documenting and investigating describe different starting tasks even when the product is the same. Ask the interviewer to describe a previous intern's deliverable and who reviewed it. A test report with an engineering decision behind it can be more useful experience than loosely defined exposure to product development.
For a work sample, use a classroom device or simulated measurement you are permitted to share. State the intended task and a measurable requirement before looking at the results. Do not change a failing requirement after seeing the data just to make the project appear successful.
A passing average can conceal a failed reading
Consider a fictional educational sensor measuring a 10.0-unit reference. The requirement is that every reading in this demonstration be within 0.2 units of the reference. It is not a requirement about the average error.
- Readings: 10.1, 10.0 and 10.3 units. Absolute errors: 0.1, 0.0 and 0.3.
- Average absolute error: 0.4 ÷ 3 = approximately 0.133 units. That average is below 0.2.
- The third reading still fails the stated requirement because its error is 0.3. The result is not a pass merely because the average looks acceptable.
Write the result an engineer could review
A complete note could read: 'The demonstration did not meet the every-reading tolerance: one of three errors exceeded 0.2 units. I would check the recorded setup and reference before choosing a design change, then test the revised version on new observations. The three readings do not establish performance outside these conditions.'
Package the requirement, raw readings, calculation and next check together. Keep any calibration observations separate from the observations used to assess the revision. In an interview, explain why you retained the failed result rather than hiding it behind the average. This is an engineering reasoning exercise, not evidence that a prototype is suitable for diagnosis or treatment.
Use your own results in an application. A suitable description is 'Compared sensor readings with a specified tolerance and documented the failing case.' Do not call the exercise medical-device validation or claim patient testing that did not occur.
Before you apply
- Eligibility
- Abbott's student page includes electrical, mechanical/biomedical, computer-science and systems co-op work. Biomedical engineering is not the only route; the individual assignment sets the degree requirements.
- Timing
- Medtronic lists an annual August 1–October 13 undergraduate/master's application window and 10–12-week internships. Abbott describes 6–8-month co-ops. The annual calendar is not a confirmed closing date for every vacancy.
- Location
- Look for the named development or manufacturing site. For laboratory work, ask which days require attendance and whether the team supplies transport or relocation support.
- Pay
- Get the actual hourly rate, paid hours and housing terms before comparing a short internship with a two-semester co-op. A higher total payment can simply reflect a much longer commitment.

Job titles to search
- Device R&D intern
- Design or compare a component; show a design choice and the evidence behind it.
- Design-verification intern
- Test a stated requirement; show the method, failure conditions and result.
- Manufacturing engineering intern

Abbott student opportunities
Separate summer internships from the longer engineering co-ops before preparing an application. The co-op's calendar can require an academic-term decision.
