A number is not a complete measurement record
For a simple software sample, retain run ID, reading, unit, timestamp and relevant configuration. Preserve the raw file and produce a separate normalized report. That gives the reviewer a way to find the original record when a result looks wrong.
The following inputs are invented. The duplicated row is explicitly an exact copy of the same run, not a second measurement with an inconveniently repeated value.
250 and 0.250 can be the same reading
Process these four records without guessing the missing conversion.
- R-1: 250 mV. Convert to 0.250 V because 1,000 mV equals 1 V.
- R-2: 0.250 V. Keep it as 0.250 V; it is a separate run with the same value.
- R-1 again: 250 mV, identical metadata. Flag the duplicate rather than count a third independent run.
- R-3: 250 instrument counts, with no calibration mapping supplied. Retain it for review; do not assume counts are mV.
Report what was processed and what was left unresolved
A complete result is: 'Two distinct runs were normalized to volts; both are 0.250 V. One exact duplicate was excluded from the distinct-run summary, and one run needs the counts-to-volts mapping. All original records remain available.' The normalized values do not show a thousandfold change, and the unresolved run does not disappear from the report.
Build the smallest parser or spreadsheet that reproduces that result. Add a check for a missing unit and an error message that tells the reader what information is needed. Do not automatically discard an unusual but well-formed observation just because it changes the average.
In an application, describe your contribution: the interface was simulated, the conversion was defined, and the checks preserved provenance. For hardware or applications roles, connect the same example to a real measurement task you have performed under appropriate supervision. Ask which part of the instrument's workflow the internship would let you work on and who reviews the output.
Before you apply
- Eligibility
- Match your preparation to hardware, scientific software or applications work. The company name alone does not establish whether an assignment needs engineering, chemistry, physics or specific laboratory experience.
- Timing
- Agilent describes year-round recruitment and paid student assignments lasting 3–12 months. Its separate Graduate Hire route is regular full-time employment, not an internship.
- Location
- Identify whether the team develops instruments, supports customers or works in manufacturing. Ask about actual laboratory attendance and any travel before comparing locations.
- Pay
- Agilent's student program is paid. Compare the exact role's compensation and duration; a thesis placement and a short summer assignment may have different calendars and support.
