Energy and engineered systems

Power systems engineering internships

Choose the engineering task before the utility name. Planning concerns a future system; protection and equipment assignments concern particular electrical components; generation work may use data from an operating site. For an analytical application, start with a calculation you can explain. The example here separates a 300 kW peak from 200 kWh of energy and shows why a missing interval cannot be treated as zero.

Four readings: calculate the peak and the energy

Fictional data: a meter reports average power of 100, 200, 300 and 200 kW for four consecutive 15-minute intervals. Each interval lasts 0.25 hours. Energy is therefore 25 + 50 + 75 + 50 = 200 kWh. Average power over the hour is 200 kW, and the largest interval-average power is 300 kW.

Multiplying the 300 kW peak by the full hour would give 300 kWh and overstate energy by 100 kWh. Summing the four power readings and calling the result 800 kWh is also wrong: the interval length is missing. These readings are interval averages, not instantaneous measurements; that is why multiplying by each interval's duration is appropriate.

A missing reading makes 150 kWh a partial total

Now remove the second reading. The three observed intervals contain 25 + 75 + 50 = 150 kWh. That is the energy represented by 45 minutes of records, not a complete hourly total. Filling the gap with zero silently assumes there was no demand during those 15 minutes.

Suppose an independently justified bound puts the missing interval's average power between 0 and 400 kW. Its energy lies between 0 and 100 kWh, so total hourly energy lies between 150 and 250 kWh. Without that bound, the records do not supply this range. Label an estimate separately from a measurement.

To add a forecasting check, use fictional actual hourly loads of 100, 200 and 300 kW. A prior-day forecast of 110, 180 and 330 has absolute errors 10, 20 and 30, for a mean absolute error of 20 kW. A prior-week forecast of 90, 220 and 310 has errors 10, 20 and 10, averaging about 13.33 kW. The prior-week baseline wins on these three observations, not necessarily on another week.

  • Keep units and interval duration beside every value.
  • Keep timestamps unambiguous, including their time zone or UTC offset; repeated local clock labels are not necessarily duplicate observations.
  • For a real forecasting sample, ensure each forecast uses only information available before its target interval.

Explain the correction before listing the software

A clear project explanation is: I separated interval-average power from energy, identified an incomplete hour and reported the missing-data assumption instead of hiding it in the total. Show the inputs and one hand calculation. This demonstrates a specific analytical skill without claiming you completed a network-planning study.

Ask the hiring team which calculation or report an intern would deliver and who reviews it. Also ask which tools must be known on arrival. Keep the practice project offline; an application sample does not require access to operating equipment.

Before you apply

Eligibility
NextEra's program requires a relevant bachelor's degree or higher in progress, full-time enrollment, GPA of at least 3.0 and proof of U.S. work eligibility. Check the engineering role's additional requirements.
Timing
NextEra describes 10–12-week summer placements and September–November recruiting for the following summer. That window is not a common deadline for every role.
Location
Get the engineering office or generating-site address, required hours and transport arrangements before choosing housing.
Pay
No hourly amount is specified on the cited NextEra program page. Ask for the role's rate and the conditions and timing of any stipend or travel reimbursement.

Job titles to search

Planning intern
Ask which load or network change you would study and what decision the study supports.
Protection or substation intern
Ask which equipment, drawings or calculations you would prepare for review.
Generation engineering intern
Ask whether the assignment concerns equipment performance, operating data or site projects.
