The longest unresolved dependency sets the start date
Fictional schedule: equipment is available at the end of month 2, site approval at the end of month 3 and grid access at the end of month 5. Assume two complete months of construction can start only after all three are ready. Construction occupies months 6 and 7; operation can begin at the start of month 8.
Accelerating equipment delivery by one month does not move that date because grid access still controls the start. Bringing grid access forward to the end of month 4 would allow construction in months 5 and 6 and operation in month 7, under these assumptions. Draw the dependencies before assigning a financial value to a faster activity.
Calculate a full year, then the year you actually have
Separate fictional economics case: a 10 MW project has an assumed 25% capacity factor over a 365-day year. Expected modeled energy is 10 × 8,760 × 0.25 = 21,900 MWh. At an assumed realized $50/MWh, revenue is $1,095,000. Subtract $300,000 of stated annual operating cash costs and the simplified full-year operating margin is $795,000.
Now delay operation by three months within that first year. Assume output would have been uniform across the year and all $300,000 of stated costs are still incurred. First-year output is 21,900 × 9/12 = 16,425 MWh; revenue is $821,250 and margin is $521,250. The delay reduces that year's margin by $273,750.
The 9/12 adjustment is a declared simplification, not a universal renewable-production rule. With seasonal generation, calculate the lost months separately. Costs may also have different timing. Capital spending, financing, taxes, incentives and terminal value are omitted, so this operating margin is not project value, net income or a complete investment return.
Write down what would change the recommendation
A useful project note might say: The base case assumes operation for a full year, but grid-access timing is unresolved. A three-month delay lowers first-year operating margin by $273,750 under the stated production and cost assumptions. Obtain the dependency dates and monthly production profile before treating the full-year case as achievable.
For an application, use this structure with your own course or project work: a decision, an identified dependency and a calculation showing its consequence. Ask the team whether the internship advances new projects, finances them or evaluates operating assets. That answer determines which evidence to show.
Before you apply
- Eligibility
- Check whether the role is commercial, engineering, environmental or financial. Renewable energy is the sector, not a degree requirement.
- Timing
- Use the actual development or project-finance requisition for the recruiting term and deadline.
- Location
- Ask which office and project market you would support and how often site travel occurs.
- Pay
- Obtain the pay amount, required hours and travel policy separately. Do not put an unconfirmed housing payment into your acceptance budget.

Job titles to search
- Project development intern
- Ask which site, approval, contract or schedule question you would help resolve.
- Project finance intern
- Ask which cash-flow assumptions you would research or model.
- Asset management intern
- Ask whether you would analyze an operating project's revenue, costs or performance rather than a proposed development.
