Put every quantity on the same boundary and time period
Fictional monthly tank records: opening storage is 500 m³, inflow is 1,200 m³, outflow is 900 m³ and recorded closing storage is 770 m³. Assume all records refer to the same tank and month and that the model initially includes no other flows. Calculated closing storage is 500 + 1,200 − 900 = 800 m³.
The observed value is 30 m³ lower. That is an unexplained balance difference, not proof of a leak. Timing, measurement error, an omitted flow or a different system boundary could also produce it. Name the difference before choosing its explanation.
Fix a unit mismatch without inventing a measurement
Suppose the inflow sheet records 1,200,000 litres while the other fields use cubic metres. Divide litres by 1,000 to obtain 1,200 m³. Failing to convert would create an enormous but entirely artificial imbalance. Keep both the reported unit and normalized value in the record.
Now consider a different month whose outflow reading is missing. Opening storage is 500 m³, inflow 1,200 m³ and closing storage 770 m³. The balance implies outflow plus any omitted losses of 500 + 1,200 − 770 = 930 m³. It does not prove that measured outflow was 930 m³. Label the value as a balance-derived estimate of the combined unaccounted exits.
If inflow is itself missing and there is no independently supported bound, the balance does not establish a complete inflow total. Do not fill the cell with zero merely to make the spreadsheet calculate. This example concerns record reconciliation, not treatment performance or drinking-water safety.
- Recorded closing storage: 770 m³; calculated closing storage under the first model: 800 m³.
- Residual, observed minus calculated: −30 m³.
- A balance-derived estimate and an instrument reading need different labels, even when their numbers match.
Write the exception so someone can act on it
Example note: The normalized records predict closing storage of 800 m³, 30 m³ above the reported 770. Please confirm that the opening and closing readings use the same cutoff and identify any transfers omitted from inflow or outflow. The current data do not identify the cause.
A small report with that calculation is more useful than an unexplained water-balance dashboard. In an interview, connect it to a real course or project and describe what you checked. Ask the team how field observations enter its records and who reviews the resulting calculations.
Before you apply
- Eligibility
- Check the discipline named in the role: engineering and environmental-science assignments can have different course and degree requirements.
- Timing
- AECOM's Americas page describes year-round recruiting, with many openings appearing in fall. Use the individual posting for its deadline.
- Location
- Get the office and expected project-site locations, including transport arrangements and the amount of field work.
- Pay
- Jacobs says internships typically do not include relocation allowances. Confirm your actual offer rather than assuming the move will be covered.

Job titles to search
- Water resources intern
- Ask which flow, quantity or infrastructure question you would analyze.
- Water or wastewater engineering intern
- Ask which design or process calculations you would prepare under review.
- Environmental engineering or science intern
- Ask how time is divided among sampling, analysis and technical reporting.
