Resolve the location before committing

This guide covers Tallahassee while distinguishing the Capitol and downtown, university campuses, research facilities and separate government or investment offices. For example, the SBA lists its headquarters at 1801 Hermitage Boulevard, while the MagLab lists 1800 East Paul Dirac Drive. Those are different work destinations. A city name alone is insufficient for a housing decision. [1,6]

Transportation: recent service changes affect the choice of neighborhood

StarMetro's Fall 2026 update changed weekday service beginning in August, including peak-only Dogwood and Killearn service and retirement of Hartsfield. Its current route tools distinguish weekday, weekend and night services. Use those tools rather than an old campus-area route map. The changes make a midday return or late meeting a separate planning question from the morning commute. [7]

FSU's bus guidance says campus buses do not operate during university closures or when classes are not in session; eligible FSU students and employees can use city routes without fare with a valid FSUCard. That eligibility should not be extended to every visiting intern. Confirm the appropriate service calendar and identification requirement. [8]

Check the complete journey to the actual office, including the last walk and the return trip after a delayed meeting. For a research placement, test laboratory hours rather than class hours. For a session placement, ask about schedule variability before relying on the last departure of the evening.

Geographic scope and the actual workplace

The FAMU-FSU engineering and research area should not be treated as interchangeable with a classroom location elsewhere on campus. Likewise, a state agency need not occupy a Capitol building. Ask for the worksite address and whether meetings or assignments require travel to additional offices.

Gainesville and Jacksonville remain separate markets. A university can administer a Tallahassee placement from another city, and a research program can offer more than one host location. Preserve the host address even when a program title emphasizes the institution rather than the city.

More than a legislative internship market

Choose the work before choosing a famous institution. An investment assignment should be assessed by the analytical responsibility available. A legislative placement might involve research, constituent service or administration. A research program should offer a suitable method, mentor and project. None becomes a strong experience solely because the employer is near the Capitol or associated with a university.

SBA: a direct route for investment and business students

The Florida State Board of Administration describes paid, part-time internships lasting about three months, all at its Tallahassee headquarters. Minimum requirements include accredited-college enrollment, junior/senior or graduate standing, a related field of study and at least a 3.0 overall GPA. Its program menu includes private equity, strategic investments, equities, fixed income, real estate, risk, accounting, auditing, financial operations and technology. Applicants must check the separate vacancy system for current opportunities. The menu is not a list of simultaneously open positions. [1]

For preparation, decide whether the target work concerns investment judgment, reporting, risk or an operating process. An applicant interested in private markets could compare two hypothetical funds using strategy, fees, liquidity, concentration and evidence about performance. A financial-operations applicant might explain a reconciliation or control improvement. These are suggested work samples, not claims about SBA interview questions.

Do not describe every private-equity-related internship as direct deal execution. Ask what the team evaluates, what information the intern can access and who uses the analysis. A role can provide useful institutional-investment experience without resembling an investment-banking analyst position.

Bring a short written recommendation with explicit assumptions and a section explaining what would change your conclusion. The point is to demonstrate judgment, not produce an elaborate model whose inputs you cannot defend. Confirm the weekly schedule before combining the role with classes.

FSU Legislative Internship: scholarship-supported, not hourly-paid

The program is unpaid, with a $3,300 scholarship that includes $300 for parking and transportation. Half is credited before the internship and half after successful completion; at least six spring credits are required. In-person orientation and Friday sessions are mandatory. The page encourages substantial Capitol attendance, with opportunities up to 40 weekly hours and a suggested minimum of 20–30. Office duties can include administrative and constituent work as well as policy research. [2]

The financial distinction matters. Do not divide the scholarship by an assumed number of weeks and present the result as an employer-paid hourly wage. Ask how the student-account payment becomes available for living costs and what happens if program requirements are not completed.

Academic feasibility belongs in the application, not after acceptance. Map classes, the compulsory sessions and the likely office schedule. A prestigious placement that delays a required course or repeatedly conflicts with attendance can be a poor decision even when the project is appealing.

A different campus-sponsored route: UF students relocating to Tallahassee

For a visiting student, confirm the full occupancy period, roommate arrangement and location before assuming relocation is solved. Ask whether any orientation or final duties fall outside the supported housing period. Keep housing provided in kind separate from cash compensation when comparing alternatives.

The Southern Group: private advocacy with earlier attendance obligations

The application requests a resume, cover letter, Fall 2026 class schedule and a response of up to 300 words about changing one's mind. The described work includes legislative tracking, policy research, committee observation and client materials. This is a private government-relations route, not employment by the legislature; confirm the offered pay and attendance terms rather than assuming the credit option also pays. [4]

A useful writing sample distinguishes a bill's actual provisions from a stakeholder's preferred outcome. Explain the problem, affected parties, evidence and unresolved questions. Avoid overstating what a proposal would accomplish. Clear, neutral analysis can still be useful in an advocacy setting because a client needs to understand risks as well as arguments in its favor.

Ask how the firm handles confidentiality, external communications and feedback on written work. Before applying, check whether the November obligations are compatible with the fall semester; this is not simply a spring internship that begins after winter break.

MagLab: science and engineering, with host location preserved

The page identifies two host locations for that cohort: FSU in Tallahassee and UF in Gainesville. Do not count every participant or project as a Tallahassee placement. The program also says it cannot reimburse housing obtained outside its arrangements. A student's willingness to find independent housing does not establish reimbursement eligibility. [6]

Technical preparation should connect a method to a scientific question. Explain a measurement limit, a simulation assumption or how you would diagnose an unexpected result. A prior project outside magnet science can still demonstrate careful experimental or computational thinking. Ask what training occurs before the intern is expected to work independently.

Where to begin

Build a target list around the work: investment analysis, financial operations, policy research, constituent services, communications or laboratory research. Then apply the institution, degree-stage, schedule and worksite filters. Tallahassee is most useful when those choices are deliberate, rather than when every opportunity near state government is treated as the same career path.

Florida House Legislative Fellows: graduate eligibility and a past application deadline

The page lists $15 hourly pay, 20 weekly hours through December and 30 thereafter, plus a choice of specified graduate-tuition support or monthly stipend benefits. Treat these as that cohort's program terms, not general legislative-intern compensation. An “Apply Now” link remaining on the page does not reopen the deadline. [5]

An undergraduate looking for a spring placement should not spend time preparing this application unless the educational-stage requirement genuinely fits. Conversely, graduate applicants should compare the time commitment and benefit structure with other campus or professional obligations rather than judging the role by hourly pay alone.

Choosing a financially and academically workable offer

Put wages, scholarships, tuition support, housing and reimbursed expenses in separate columns. They are not interchangeable. A scholarship may arrive through a student account; a housing benefit may cover only specified dates; a paid role may still require unreimbursed travel. Do not value academic credit as cash income.

Calculate the whole commitment, including mandatory days before the main placement. A November orientation can create travel costs for a spring intern. A three-month part-time assignment can fit a semester better than a session role with variable hours, but only when the actual schedule works. Obtain the manager's expectations in writing.

Choose a placement with a clear project and accessible supervision. Ask for an example of a prior intern's deliverable, the review process and what information can be discussed later. Treat any suggested progression or full-time opportunity as uncertain until the employer explains its actual process.

Turn this market into an application shortlist

Start with a role family in the local employer map, then narrow by the actual reporting site. Save the employer-controlled posting before treating a name on this page as an opportunity. For each viable role, compare the work, enrollment requirements, stated compensation unit and the cost of reaching that site. A regional employer list is not a verified vacancy list.

Use the local transport and housing sources for the schedule you would actually work. Keep a quote for the correct dates and a cash plan for deposits or costs due before the first paycheck; historical housing figures in the research are not current offers.

Background

Tallahassee offers several distinct student routes: investment and financial operations at Florida's State Board of Administration, university-sponsored legislative placements, private government-relations work and scientific research at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. Their calendars and applicant populations differ substantially. A spring session placement cannot be evaluated as though it were a conventional ten-week summer internship. [1–6]
