Start with the work current finance internships actually ask students to do
Current postings are a better preparation target than a generic finance-skills list. Fidelity’s Summer 2027 undergraduate finance internship names Excel formulas and pivot tables, financial and statistical updates, reporting automation, data analysis and financial modeling. Mutual of Omaha’s Summer 2027 finance internship names FP&A, M&A, reinsurance, finance operations and data analysis, with interns compiling data, communicating findings and supporting business decisions.
| Current posting | Work the employer names | Evidence you can practice before holding the title | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fidelity — Summer 2027 Undergraduate Internship, Finance | Excel formulas and pivot tables, data manipulation, reporting automation, analysis and financial modeling | A clean workbook that takes raw operating data through checks, analysis, a decision-oriented output and a short explanation of the result | |
| Mutual of Omaha — Summer 2027 Finance Intern | FP&A, M&A, reinsurance, finance operations, data analysis, compiling data and communicating findings | A bounded finance project where the inputs, assumptions, analysis and recommendation can be inspected separately |
Those two roles already show why 'finance experience' is too broad. One student may need a budget-variance model and Excel fluency; another may need credit analysis, investment research or cash-management evidence. Build toward the decision made by the team you are targeting.
The experience screen is also not uniform. Mutual of Omaha lists prior professional work or internship experience only as preferred and explicitly says suitable leadership experience in student organizations or university athletics will be considered. Fidelity’s reviewed posting lists skills and student-status requirements but does not state a prior finance internship requirement. Neither fact should be generalized to every finance employer.
Choose the finance lane before you choose the project
If you want FP&A or corporate finance, practice planning, variance analysis, forecasting and communicating what changed. If you want commercial or corporate banking, practice understanding a borrower, cash generation, leverage and downside risk. If you want investment research, practice forming a thesis from filings, industry evidence and valuation rather than predicting a stock price. If you want treasury, practice liquidity, cash timing, funding and foreign-exchange or interest-rate exposure.
A project is useful when it helps a reviewer see work that resembles the target role. A discounted-cash-flow model can be relevant for one role and nearly useless for another. A student targeting FP&A who cannot explain a revenue variance usually needs that skill more than another valuation certificate.
Do not force every finance path into investment banking. The reviewed Fidelity and Mutual of Omaha roles emphasize internal analysis and business decisions; they do not establish that every finance internship involves transaction execution.
Four first projects can create finance evidence without pretending you had a finance job
For FP&A, build a small operating model using public or clearly fictional inputs. Forecast revenue and costs, then explain one variance with a price-volume or volume-mix bridge. For commercial banking, write a short credit memo on a public company or fictional borrower: business model, cash flow, leverage, repayment source, downside case and the questions you would ask before lending.
| Target lane | First project | What a reviewer should be able to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| FP&A / corporate finance | Forecast plus variance bridge | Inputs, formulas, checks, forecast logic, variance decomposition and a short management explanation |
| Commercial / corporate banking | Credit memo | Borrower economics, cash flow, leverage, repayment source, downside case and unanswered questions |
| Investment research | Public-company thesis | Primary-source facts, assumptions, scenario range, valuation logic and the evidence that would change your view |
| Treasury | Thirteen-week cash forecast | Cash timing, liquidity threshold, scenario changes and funding or working-capital implications |
For investment research, choose one public company and write a two-page thesis supported by filings and a small valuation range. Separate historical facts from your assumptions. For treasury, build a thirteen-week cash forecast for a fictional business with receipts, payroll, rent, debt service and a minimum-cash threshold; then test what happens if collections slip or a large payment moves forward.
These are practice projects, not employment. Use public-company disclosures, government data or clearly fictional assumptions. Never imply you advised a company, managed money, approved credit or handled confidential client information when you did not.
A ten-day finance evidence sprint is enough to finish one defensible project
This is a suggested scope, not an employer requirement. Day 1: choose one target lane and save three current internship postings. Extract the repeated work, tools and decision context. Day 2: define one question your project will answer and list the data you need. Days 3–4: collect the data, document sources and clean it before modeling.
Days 5–6: build the analysis in a workbook with separate input, calculation and output areas. Add checks that make obvious mistakes visible. Day 7: run at least two scenarios and write what changed and why. Day 8: reduce the result to one page or a few slides that a manager could read without opening every formula. Day 9: ask someone to challenge one assumption and revise the model or explanation. Day 10: prepare a two-minute walkthrough and start applying.
Stop when the project answers a bounded question and you can defend the formulas. Do not spend six weeks adding tabs that never change the decision.
Use non-finance work when it contains finance evidence
A retail, restaurant, campus, military, operations or student-organization role can produce useful finance evidence when you worked with budgets, cash, pricing, inventory, labor hours, purchasing, reconciliations, fundraising or performance reporting. Describe the actual responsibility and the decision it supported. Do not rename a general job as a finance internship.
Mutual of Omaha’s current posting is useful here because prior professional work or internship experience is preferred rather than listed as a minimum requirement, and the posting says suitable leadership experience in student organizations or university athletics will be considered. That does not mean every employer treats those experiences the same way. It does mean students should audit existing experience before assuming the résumé is empty.
If you have no usable finance evidence yet, a project can fill one gap. It should not become a reason to delay applications indefinitely.

Label the project truthfully and apply while the evidence is still small
Use the real context: Independent FP&A project, Finance coursework project, Student organization budget analysis or the actual title of your job. Do not call yourself a Finance Intern when there was no employer and no internship. Do not claim your recommendation saved money if nobody implemented it. Do not present a model built from fictional inputs as company analysis.
A useful bullet structure is: Built [model or analysis] using [source or dataset] to answer [decision question]; tested [scenario or sensitivity]; identified [supported finding]. Keep every number traceable. If the project is public-company research, separate reported data from your estimates and make the valuation assumptions visible.
Fidelity’s current role is a reminder that Excel and data handling can be explicit screens. Mutual of Omaha’s role is a reminder that communication and judgment matter alongside analysis. Once you can explain one project cleanly, apply and keep building in parallel.
