State the degree you are pursuing now

Use your current credential and enrollment status. 'Associate of Science, expected May 2027' is different from 'Bachelor of Science, expected May 2029'. A plan to transfer is not current enrollment at a four-year institution.

Search for 'community college', 'associate degree', 'two-year college' and the task you want to do. When a form offers only bachelor's and graduate options, ask the program how associate-degree students should apply rather than choosing a degree you are not pursuing.

Two research routes, with an important first-semester trap

DOE's Community College Internships program accepts applications from current full- or part-time community college or accredited two-year college students. Its academic requirements include a completed matriculated semester and, by the application deadline, at least 12 undergraduate credit hours including six in STEM. The specified credit minimums exclude AP and other credits earned while in high school. Check the full rules for GPA, age, status and participation limits.

That matters for a new student: arriving with many AP credits does not necessarily make you eligible immediately. Check what must be completed by the application deadline, not just by the internship's start.

NSF's REU student guidance includes associate- and bachelor's-degree students who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents or U.S. nationals. Individual sites can add restrictions. Apply through the particular site or opportunity; one site's rules do not cover every REU.

Show what happened in the course, lab or job

Choose an example that makes your preparation visible. For a technical course, describe the setup, what you measured and how you checked an unexpected result. For an accounting or office role, describe the records, the checks and the output.

Original fictional résumé example: 'Documented a circuit-testing assignment, compared readings with the expected range and traced a failed test to a loose connection under instructor supervision.' That is more informative than 'advanced engineering experience' and keeps the level of training clear.

Prepare for a transfer without mislabeling it

Keep your current transcript, an accurate résumé and the dates you can work. Ask a reference who has seen the work most relevant to the program, whether at school or in paid employment.

If a transfer changes your enrollment before the internship, ask which date the program uses to determine eligibility. Do not assume it is the application date, the start date or the next fall. Update the employer when a confirmed transfer changes information in an active application.

Check the CCI threshold and its separate waiver requirement

DOE's CCI eligibility page states a minimum GPA of 2.7 and requires a GPA-waiver statement from applicants below 3.0. Do not turn the waiver threshold into a 3.0 minimum or assume a 2.7 GPA waives every other condition. Current enrollment, completed coursework, age and citizenship or residency requirements also matter.

For Spring 2027, the reviewed program dates identify September 30, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time as the application and recommendation deadline. This is not the Summer 2027 deadline. Keep the term attached to the date and allow time for references.

Compare a laboratory path with local technical or business work using the actual task and schedule. A future transfer plan should remain labelled as a plan, not current enrollment in a degree you have not started.
