Do not submit both and hope one becomes the right choice.

DOE’s SULI FAQ says applicants may not submit to more than one of SULI, CCI or VFP for the same term; only the first submitted application is considered. Creating accounts or preparing drafts is not the same as submitting, but you should resolve the program choice before taking that final step.

The reviewed Spring 2027 deadline was September 30, 2026 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time, including recommendations. It has passed. Both key-date pages now announce Summer 2027; the dates remain tentative and offers depend on funding. The eligibility and lab-cost examples below retain their September source reviews unless a later check is explicitly named.

Use the exact rule for your academic record.

A community-college student does not automatically belong only in CCI: a full-time student may also fit SULI’s academic route. Conversely, part-time community-college enrollment can be relevant to CCI when it would not satisfy SULI’s current-student full-time requirement. Compare the work you want and every applicable condition before choosing.

SULI’s FAQ explicitly says 2.95 is acceptable when rounded to one decimal place, while 2.94 is not. That is a stated SULI clarification, not permission to invent a GPA calculation or transfer the rule to CCI. Read how prior institutions and matriculated coursework are included, and ask the program when your transcript does not fit a straightforward case.

CCI’s statement for applicants below 3.0 is an additional requirement. A 2.9 applicant should not omit it because they exceed the 2.7 minimum. Nor should an applicant below the minimum assume the word waiver automatically removes the floor. Use the actual instructions to explain your situation.

Before writing essays, put your enrollment status, completed credits, expected graduation and cumulative academic record into a private checklist. An unresolved eligibility question deserves a clear message with those facts. It is better to settle it before submission than to send the wrong program application and discover that the first-submission rule matters.

Choose the work you want to learn, not a presumed prestige ranking.

Compare the laboratory’s actual research or technical areas with your preparation. You might enjoy analyzing a model, working carefully with measurements, organizing experimental data or solving an instrumentation problem. Describe the task and method rather than writing that any national laboratory would be exciting.

Private SULI-versus-CCI decision record

Term I am applying for: Current institution and full-/part-time status: Completed matriculated semester and credits: GPA calculation under this program’s rules: Required GPA statement, if applicable: Expected graduation and recent-graduate status: Laboratory work I want to learn: Relevant task I have actually completed: Program I will submit to, and why: Reference receipt status: Final application confirmation:

A useful preparation example is specific about supervision. A student who performed measurements in a course can explain the setup, the check they made and what the instructor helped them resolve. They should not claim independent professional proficiency in a procedure they only observed. The distinction helps a potential supervisor understand both readiness and the training needed.

Write one short account of a real problem: what you intended to find out, what you personally did, what the result showed and what it did not show. If a result was inconsistent, explain how you investigated it. A careful limitation is useful evidence; a dramatic discovery you cannot substantiate is not.

Do not use the comparison table as a guarantee that a chosen lab has a matching project or will select you. Read the current laboratory descriptions and the application’s preference instructions. A program choice, a lab preference and an offer are three separate decisions.

Treat recommendations as part of the same deadline.

Both key-date pages say the application, including recommendations, is due at the published cutoff. Ask eligible recommenders early and supply the actual program instructions. Track whether the system received the letters, not just whether you sent requests or somebody agreed to write.

Use a separate row for every required document and identify who must act. You can correct your résumé or upload a permitted transcript yourself. You cannot complete a confidential recommendation by marking it done in a tracker. A focused reminder should identify the actual deadline and submission link without asking to see confidential content.

Leave time to open every file and review the application before submission. Check institution labels, dates, legibility and the specific document rules. A convenient screenshot or degree audit is not interchangeable with a requested transcript. Use the individual program guides for their fuller document instructions.

The reviewed Fermilab page listed a September 23, 2026 program-office session from 2–3 p.m. EDT for SULI/CCI administrative and submission questions, with registration required. That session is now a historical example, not an upcoming event or an extension of the September 30 deadline. Check the official page for any later office hours.

Make a single Summer application packet with separate receipt checks: your form, each transcript and each recommendation. Put a personal completion target before January 6 and label it as your target. Ask a recommender whether they can meet the official cutoff before treating that application as feasible. A ready essay with missing dependent materials is an unfinished application.

Do not assume one national-laboratory housing package.

Fermilab publishes Spring 2027 dates of January 11–April 30, with $650 weekly support and no provided housing. Ames publishes January 24–May 7 and describes the same weekly stipend alongside a $170-per-week campus-housing fee or an alternative $250-per-week housing allowance. These are site-specific descriptions, not two benefits to add together or a universal DOE package.

Ask the prospective site to confirm the actual arrangement, work dates, travel rules and payment timing. A housing allowance requires a housing plan; a room available for a fee is not free accommodation. Do not compute a guaranteed total award by multiplying an assumed number of weeks when the stated dates or paid-period rules are unclear.

Put the placement beside your academic calendar and other obligations. A semester-long full-time experience may require formal arrangements with your institution. Resolve those practical conditions before accepting rather than assuming an offer automatically changes your course requirements.

For any later cycle, verify the new official dates before choosing the eligible program, completing the required materials and checking receipt. If an offer arrives, evaluate the actual work and support together. Prepare without making travel or housing commitments on unconfirmed terms.
