Do these tasks before polishing the essay

Summer 2027 dates were checked October 1. This is an announced window; it has not opened at this check. Dates are tentative and offers depend on funding. Start with your academic eligibility and reference availability, then check the actual Summer term when the application opens.

The reviewed Spring 2027 cutoff was September 30, 2026 at 5 p.m. Eastern, including recommendations. That window has ended. For a later cycle, confirm the official dates and eligibility before starting; when applications open, send the system's recommendation requests early so referees can work while you choose laboratories and revise your answers.

SULI and CCI are not two independent chances in the same term. DOE's system allows access to multiple applications but blocks additional submissions after the first. Choose the program that fits your academic stage and intended work before pressing Submit.

Check completed credits, not the courses you plan to take

The main academic screen is a completed matriculated undergraduate term, at least six qualifying STEM credits and twelve total qualifying undergraduate credits by the deadline, and the program's cumulative GPA requirement. Credits earned while still solely a high-school student do not satisfy the completed-college requirement. SULI also specifies eligible enrollment or recent-graduate status, U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, age 18 by the appointment start, and prior-participation limits.

There is a program-specific GPA exception worth knowing: DOE's SULI FAQ says 2.95 satisfies its stated 3.0 threshold when rounded as instructed; 2.94 does not. Enter the transcript information accurately and follow DOE's calculation. This is not permission to report an invented 3.0 to other employers or to ignore records from earlier institutions.

Avoid a rejection for the wrong transcript or missing letters

Use a permitted official or unofficial PDF transcript, not a screenshot or degree audit. It must show your name, institution, courses, grades and GPA where supplied. DOE also requires applicable prior-institution transcripts. Its current-transcript rule means a record accessed or printed no earlier than the application opening, not an old file from a previous term.

Remove Social Security numbers and full birth dates using a proper redaction tool, then reopen the exported file to check both privacy and legibility. DOE treats these privacy requirements as part of application compliance.

Two recommendations are required. You may request three, but the first two completed are the ones reviewed. Choose academic or professional contacts who know your relevant preparation; family, friends and peer classmates do not qualify. Enter the requests in DOE's system rather than relying on a promise to send a letter by email.

Explain why that laboratory fits your preparation

Choose a research area before choosing a famous laboratory name. Write down the problem the group studies, one method it uses, and the part of your experience that would help you begin. A student does not need to promise a discovery; the application should make the starting point understandable.

Invented example for a computational project: 'In numerical methods, I built a model and compared its output with a case for which we knew the solution. My first version produced a plausible graph but failed that check because I had used inconsistent units. Correcting the inputs changed the result. I am interested in computational materials research because I want to learn how researchers test models when they cannot compare every prediction with an experiment. I have used Python for course assignments; I have not yet worked with the laboratory's specialized simulation tools.'

This gives a reviewer more to discuss than 'proficient in Python and passionate about energy.' Name the actual laboratory research that prompted your interest, then use a real example you can explain under questioning.

Check the final application, then the placement calendar

Before submission, open every attachment and read each answer beside the actual prompt. Confirm the right term, your laboratory choices, all required transcripts and recommendation status. Save the final application confirmation. A reference still outstanding must reach the system by the applicable term’s cutoff; submitting your own form does not extend it.

Before accepting a placement, put its actual work dates beside classes and exams. Ask the host about housing, the first payment and the person supervising daily work. A semester research placement is a substantial calendar commitment, not automatically something you can fit between daytime classes.
