RelationshipLeadership and accounting-career development program; not an internship

The program is built around accounting-career exploration, leadership development, professional and personal skills, networking and team activities. HM&M describes it as a three-day student program, not an internship or client-work assignment.

The current pages do not publish a 2027 venue, virtual-versus-in-person format, participant compensation, separate assessment or acceptance rate. Do not infer those details from HM&M’s internship program.

The hard gates are two accounting classes, a business-school major and a 3.0 GPA

HM&M’s current qualifications require applicants to have completed their first two accounting classes, be in any major within the business school and hold at least a 3.0 GPA. The program page does not narrow eligibility to accounting majors.

HM&M does not publish a graduation-year window or prior-internship requirement for this program. A student can therefore apply before having accounting employment if the coursework, major and GPA gates are satisfied.

Keep unpublished requirements unpublished. Do not add citizenship, work authorization, compensation, travel or housing rules unless HM&M publishes them for this program.

The application is short-answer heavy and requires a reference

The current application asks for school, major, minor, classification, expected graduation date and other student information. It then asks short questions about accounting interests, current activities, strengths and weaknesses, leadership, program motivation and an influential person. Responses are capped at three sentences each.

The form also requires a reference through a separate reference route. Choose someone who has directly seen you follow through on real work rather than selecting a name only for prestige.

Prior internship experience is not required to answer the prompts. Coursework, student organizations, part-time jobs, volunteering, tutoring and other real responsibilities can supply the evidence. Keep the relationship label precise: class projects are academic work, not employment.

The leadership program and HM&M internship are separate recruiting steps

HM&M describes the leadership program as career exploration, leadership development, networking and team activity. Its separate internship program includes hands-on training, a buddy, projects across industries and work with clients. Those internship duties should not be transferred to leadership-program participants.

If you attend the leadership program, describe it as a leadership or professional-development program rather than HM&M employment. Use only the activities and outcomes you actually completed.

HM&M’s campus page tells students who are not ready for an internship to consider the Student Leadership Program. It separately says full-time opportunities may be available after successful internship completion. The firm does not state that leadership-program participation guarantees an internship interview, internship or full-time offer.

Apply by the current deadline, then keep internship recruiting separate

If you meet the coursework and GPA requirements, complete the short answers and reference early enough to submit before April 15. Recheck the HM&M application page before sending in case the employer changes the current cycle.

Use the program to sharpen your audit-versus-tax and broader accounting-career decision. Ask practitioners what junior staff actually produce, how their work is reviewed and what a first internship assignment looks like.

Keep recruiting broadly after applying. The leadership program can add employer exposure and professional-development evidence, but it is not a substitute for separate internship applications.
