What is actually published for 2027?
NIST now gives an expected mid-October 2026 USAJOBS opening and an end-of-January 2027 application deadline. It has not supplied an exact day in those statements, and its 2027 program dates are still marked to be determined. January 31 is not a confirmed deadline just because the source says end of January.
The page also contains 2026 stipend and support figures. Those belong to the earlier cycle. Use the new announcement for the amount and dates you would be agreeing to, rather than building a 2027 budget from a year-old offer.

First-year students and graduating seniors are included
NIST's published criteria include full-time undergraduates at accredited U.S. two- or four-year colleges, including first-year students and graduating seniors, who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The program also specifies age 18, a full-time work schedule, insurance and background-check requirements. Read the new vacancy for its final application conditions.
Boulder and Gaithersburg use separate applications. NIST says students applying to both may reuse their documents, but must submit to each opportunity. Preparing one résumé does not complete two applications.
A consistent result can still be wrong
A useful application example shows how you checked a result. Here is an invented measurement exercise with a reference value of 10.0 units. It illustrates a reasoning habit, not a NIST test or a calibration procedure.
| Set | Readings | Mean | Observed range |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 9.8, 10.0, 10.2 | 10.0 | 0.4 |
| B | 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 | 10.3 | 0.2 |
- B has a smaller spread in these three readings, but its mean is 0.3 units above the reference.
- A's mean matches the reference, although the individual readings vary more.
- The smaller spread alone does not show that B is more accurate. Three readings also do not establish long-run instrument performance.
Turn that habit into a project paragraph
A student who actually performed a comparable class exercise could write: 'I compared repeat measurements with a reference rather than judging quality only by how closely the readings agreed with each other. One set varied less but had a larger offset from the reference. I documented both the average and spread before deciding what the comparison supported. I want to learn how researchers separate measurement variability from systematic error.'
Use your own experiment, software test or analysis, and name the checks you performed. Keep the claim proportional: a classroom exercise can demonstrate careful reasoning without being a discovery or professional certification.
For the application itself, build a readable two-page résumé and gather the supporting documents listed by the new USAJOBS announcement. Make the relevant project understandable on the page; do not rely on a hyperlink to carry the evidence a reviewer needs.

Choose a feasible placement before committing to a lease
Ask for the individual work dates and campus, whether you must arrange your own housing, and how any support is paid. NIST's program page says participants find their own housing. A housing allowance and an available room are separate things.
For supervision, ask what you would work on first, what training precedes independent work and who would review your progress. A specific answer helps you compare a measurement, computing or engineering project on the work you would actually learn, rather than only on the campus name.
