A 1 MW limit is not 1 MWh of available energy
Fictional one-cycle model: storage starts empty, can hold 1 MWh internally and accepts at most 1 MW of charging input. Assume 90% of charging input becomes stored energy, discharge has no additional loss, and power limits permit the later discharge. This places all modeled round-trip loss on charging for simplicity; it is not a measured device specification.
Charge at 1 MW for one hour: input energy is 1 MWh and stored energy becomes 0.9 MWh. With no further charge, the model can later export only 0.9 MWh, not 1 MWh. A power rating describes a rate; available energy limits how long that rate can continue.
Check whether the price spread pays for the losses
Buy that 1 MWh at $40/MWh and later sell the 0.9 MWh output at $50/MWh. Purchase cost is $40 and sales are $45, leaving $5 before all omitted costs. The no-loss calculation would incorrectly report $10.
At a sale price of $44/MWh, revenue is $39.60 and the cycle loses $0.40 before other costs. The energy-only break-even sale price is $40 ÷ 0.9, about $44.44/MWh. Adding an assumed $4 cost for that cycle reduces the original $5 margin to $1.
Now lower the charging input limit to 0.5 MW and keep the cheap-price period at one hour. Only 0.5 MWh can be bought, 0.45 MWh is stored and later exported, and the $40/$50 case yields $22.50 − $20 = $2.50 before other costs. Having 1 MWh of storage capacity does not remove the charging-power constraint.
- State of charge after the first charge: 0.9 MWh; after selling it: zero.
- No interval may export more energy than the modeled state contains.
- Selecting the cheapest and most expensive hours after seeing the whole day is a perfect-foresight case, not a strategy you proved could run in advance.
Show the assumption that changed the answer
For a systems or commercial application, show the input limit, energy balance and price calculation together. Explain which constraint binds in each scenario. Do not present the $5 as a forecast of a real asset's earnings; the case excludes equipment costs, actual operating rules, degradation evidence and market uncertainty.
For cell research, use a relevant supervised experiment or course analysis instead. Ask which part of the battery or storage project the internship covers and how the team validates its models or measurements. No hardware assembly is needed for this computational sample.
Before you apply
- Eligibility
- INL lists a 3.0 cumulative GPA and full-time enrollment before and after the internship. Its page also specifies CPT authorization for international students at U.S. colleges; check the selected application's conditions.
- Timing
- INL describes 10–16-week terms. Its general research application considers candidates for projects rather than guaranteeing a battery assignment.
- Location
- Confirm whether the project is laboratory research, software analysis or site engineering before arranging a move.
- Pay
- INL says wages depend on academic credits and degree program. Some placements provide travel and housing support; obtain your award's actual terms.
Job titles to search
- Cell research or characterization intern
- Ask which material, measurement or research question the supervised work addresses.
- Storage systems intern
- Ask whether you would model controls, integration or operating constraints.
- Storage commercial intern
- Ask which project costs, prices and operating assumptions you would evaluate.
