Start with your class year: the two BNY programs are not interchangeable
BNY publishes Freshman Jumpstart and Sophomore Summit under one U.S. Pre-Internship Program page, but they serve different academic stages. Freshman Jumpstart is for first-year bachelor’s students with an expected graduation date of December 2029 or May 2030. Sophomore Summit is for second-year bachelor’s students expected to graduate in December 2028 or May 2029.
| Question | Freshman Jumpstart | Sophomore Summit |

| Format | Virtual; two interactive half-day sessions | Virtual; three sessions across six weeks |
| Published 2027 track | Business & Corporate Functions | Engineering & Technology or Business & Corporate |

Both are virtual early-career programs, not internships. Freshman Jumpstart is two interactive half-day sessions. Sophomore Summit is three sessions across six weeks and adds a business case study or coding challenge. If your year or expected graduation date does not match the published route, use BNY’s current student programs to find the route that actually fits.
For the 2027 cycle, BNY says Freshman Jumpstart registrations and Sophomore Summit applications begin January 11, 2027. The current page does not publish a closing date.

The common eligibility rules still matter
BNY’s U.S. pre-internship page is for first- and second-year undergraduates pursuing a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university. It is open across majors, with a stronger focus on business-related and computer-science-related fields.
The current page says applicants must not require sponsorship for employment visa status now or in the future. The virtual format does not remove that employer rule.
Academic performance is part of review, but the current page does not publish one universal numeric GPA cutoff. It also does not list a prior internship or finance job as an eligibility requirement. Phrase that as an absence of a published requirement, not as a guarantee that experience never matters.

January 11 is an opening date, not a deadline
BNY’s shared pre-internship process is short: research the firm and program, submit a resume and short questions about yourself and what you want to learn, then wait for review and selection. The current page does not list a separate interview or pre-program technical assessment.
Prepare before January 11: a clean one-page resume and two examples you can reuse in short answers, one about solving a problem and one about learning something unfamiliar. Use coursework, projects, campus work, part-time work, volunteering or research without relabeling those experiences as internships.
For Sophomore Summit, the business case or coding challenge is listed as program content, not as an application assessment.

Jumpstart is exploratory; Sophomore Summit adds a more inspectable work signal
Freshman Jumpstart is built around financial-services spotlights, conversations with interns and analysts, networking and personal-branding workshops, and interactive skill building. BNY does not name a required portfolio artifact for this route.
Sophomore Summit adds a real-world challenge. BNY says participants work through either a business case study or a coding challenge while exploring career paths and meeting interns and analysts. If you complete the challenge, keep notes on the problem, your own contribution, how you checked the work and what changed after feedback.
Describe either program accurately on a resume. Participation is a pre-internship or early-career program, not BNY employment.

Read “can be considered for the Summer Internship Program” literally
BNY says Sophomore Summit participants can be considered for the Summer Internship Program. The current page does not say every participant receives an interview, assessment or offer, and it does not publish a conversion rate.
The Summer Internship Program is a separate employment process with its own assessment, interview and offer stages. Do not list yourself as a BNY intern because you attended Sophomore Summit.
Freshman Jumpstart does not publish the same Summer Internship consideration sentence. Do not assume a guaranteed Jumpstart → Summit → internship ladder.
Use the program as one step in a broader search
If you are a first-year student, use Jumpstart to identify one function you want to test, then build a concrete signal after it. If you are a second-year student, use the Summit track and challenge to test a function and prepare a later interview example around work you actually completed.
Keep applying elsewhere. A pre-internship event should not become the only route in your search, and a registration-of-interest or pre-internship application is not a summer internship application.
