Ten routes, five eligibility gates
This table combines the eligibility questions that were previously easiest to read as separate slices. The denominator is 10 named routes. Each row is source-bound to the program itself; employer-wide internship rules are not imported into a separate summit, webinar or discovery program unless the program source does so.
| Program | Academic stage | Major / field | GPA | Citizenship / work authorization | School / geography | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Girls Who Invest Scholars Program — 2027 | College first-years and sophomores in the published graduation range; first-years cannot opt into Internship Track | All majors | No minimum GPA; holistic review | Scholars participation has no citizenship/work-authorization restriction; most facilitated Internship Track matches require unrestricted U.S. work authorization | Enrolled in or transferring to an accredited four-year U.S. or U.S.-style institution | |
| PIMCO Prep | Second-year university students | Any academic discipline | NOT_STATED on the reviewed Prep page | Educational webinar participation is open globally; this does not establish later internship sponsorship | Open globally, with region-specific sessions | |
| BNY Freshman Jumpstart — 2027 | First-year bachelor’s student; published graduation window Dec. 2029 / May 2030 | All majors; BNY notes a strong focus on business- and computer-science-related majors | Numeric minimum NOT_STATED on the reviewed pre-internship page | Must not require employment-visa sponsorship now or in the future | U.S. undergraduate route; use the current program page for school and regional academic requirements | |
| BNY Sophomore Summit — 2027 | Second-year bachelor’s student; published graduation window Dec. 2028 / May 2029 | All majors; BNY notes a strong focus on business- and computer-science-related majors | Numeric minimum NOT_STATED on the reviewed pre-internship page | Must not require employment-visa sponsorship now or in the future | U.S. undergraduate route; use the current program page for school and regional academic requirements | |
| Valero Freshman Engineering Summit & Scholarship — 2027 | Currently enrolled college freshman | Chemical, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering required; undeclared/pre-engineering students may apply if considering one of those majors | Minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale | U.S. citizen or permanent resident required | Currently enrolled at an accredited university | |
| DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) | Undergraduate after at least one completed matriculated term plus 6 STEM and 12 total undergraduate credits by the application deadline | STEM major not required; STEM coursework, aptitude and interest matter | Minimum cumulative 3.0 | U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident at application | Full-time undergraduate at an accredited institution; placement is at participating U.S. laboratories | |
| DOE Community College Internships (CCI) | Community/two-year college student after at least one completed matriculated term plus 6 STEM and 12 total undergraduate credits by the application deadline | No named-major gate coded; STEM-credit requirements still apply | Minimum cumulative 2.7; below 3.0 requires a GPA-waiver statement | U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident at application | Current student at an accredited community college or two-year institution | |
| Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) — 2027 | Rising sophomore or later; must be on track to complete freshman year by internship start | Field must be relevant to participating laboratory research interests | Numeric minimum NOT_STATED; academic achievement is a selection factor | U.S. citizenship is the default; select labs consider permanent residents or dual citizens under lab-specific rules | Normally full-time at an accredited four-year institution; two-year-college exceptions can exist at laboratory discretion | |
| Citi Freshman Discovery | First-year student in a four-year bachelor’s program | All majors | Numeric minimum NOT_STATED; academic achievement is part of selection | NOT_STATED on the reviewed Freshman Discovery page | Four-year bachelor’s program at a U.S.-accredited institution | |
| Fidelity FidHacks | Full-time first-year college or university student | Specific college major NOT_STATED; the event is technology-focused and open to all first-year students | Numeric minimum NOT_STATED | NOT_STATED on the reviewed FidHacks page | Full-time college or university enrollment; no separate school-country gate stated on the reviewed page |
| Dimension | State | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Academic stage | DIRECT / CHECKPOINT | Direct class-year access is different from a completed-term, credit or rising-year checkpoint |
| Major / field | OPEN / TARGETED / REQUIRED / NOT_STATED | All-major access, preferred background and a hard named-major gate are different states |
| GPA | MINIMUM / NO_MINIMUM / NOT_STATED | A published floor, an explicit waiver of a floor and silence are not interchangeable |
| Authorization | HARD_GATE / PROGRAM-TRACK_SPLIT / NOT_STATED | Program participation can be broader than a later paid-work path |
| School / geography | INSTITUTION_GATE / BROAD_ACCESS / NOT_STATED | Where a program happens does not by itself determine where an applicant must study or live |
NOT_STATED means the reviewed public program page does not enumerate that field. It does not mean “no requirement.” A numeric GPA that is not stated is different from an explicit no-minimum policy, and a missing sponsorship statement is different from sponsorship approval.

The fastest rejection screen is the combination of hard gates
Valero is the clearest stacked-gate case. “Freshmen eligible” is incomplete: the 2027 summit also requires one of three engineering majors or the narrow undeclared/pre-engineering exception, a 3.0 GPA and U.S.-citizen-or-permanent-resident status. If one of those published conditions fails, interview preparation is not the next task.
SULI and CCI create a different stack. A first-year student can eventually qualify, but DOE tests a completed matriculated term plus 6 STEM and 12 total undergraduate credits by the application deadline. SULI then adds a 3.0 cumulative GPA; CCI uses 2.7 and requires a waiver statement below 3.0. Both require U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence.
NREIP shows why the checkpoint belongs in the same matrix. A student may apply during freshman year if they will be a rising sophomore by the internship start, but the program still layers research-field fit, enrollment and lab-specific citizenship rules on top.
An open major rule can sit next to a restrictive authorization or school rule
BNY is open across majors for both Freshman Jumpstart and Sophomore Summit, but the same pre-internship surface says applicants must not require employment-visa sponsorship now or in the future and uses exact graduation windows. An “all majors” label therefore tells you very little by itself.
Girls Who Invest separates participation from the downstream internship path. The Scholars Program is open across majors, has no minimum GPA and does not restrict participation by citizenship or work authorization. The optional sophomore Internship Track is narrower: most GWI-facilitated matches require unrestricted U.S. work authorization. A student can be eligible for the educational program without being eligible for the matched internship route.
PIMCO Prep is broader still because the educational webinar is open globally and across academic disciplines. PIMCO also says Prep is not an application or assessment. That global access cannot be carried over to a later PIMCO internship unless the internship posting says so.
Use NOT_STATED as a research flag, not a favorable answer
Citi Freshman Discovery and Fidelity FidHacks do not publish a citizenship or work-authorization rule on the reviewed program pages. That is not evidence that either route will accept every immigration status. BNY does publish an authorization rule, so its row can be screened directly.
The same logic applies to GPA. Girls Who Invest explicitly says there is no minimum GPA. BNY, Citi, Fidelity and NREIP do not publish a numeric minimum on the reviewed program surfaces used here. Those are different evidence states. NREIP even names academic achievement as a selection factor without turning it into a numeric floor.
When a material field is NOT_STATED, open the live application and FAQ before submitting. Do not borrow a condition from another employer program to fill the blank.
Screen eligibility before application burden
Start with the academic-stage checkpoint. Then check school or geography, citizenship or work authorization, GPA, and major or required coursework. This order gets the cheapest hard screens out of the way before you ask for recommendations, draft essays or prepare for interviews.
If every published hard gate matches, move the route into the application queue and open the current application-process page for materials and selection steps. If one field is NOT_STATED and could change eligibility, put the route in a verify queue rather than a reject or apply queue. If a mandatory condition clearly conflicts, move on to an alternative route instead of trying to compensate with stronger extracurriculars.
The matrix is most useful as a subtraction tool. It reduces a large early-career list to programs you can honestly pursue now, programs that need one factual check, and programs whose published requirements do not fit.
Method: one bounded denominator, row-level sources and literal evidence states
This is a purposive comparison of 10 current or recurring early-career routes that reach first-year or second-year students. It is not a census of employers or a market-wide estimate. Counts and examples apply only to these rows.
The page was consolidated September 23, 2026 from registered primary-source records observed September 22–23. A field is coded only from the named program’s own source surface. A later internship rule is kept separate from an educational program unless the source explicitly connects them. Source records retain their original observation dates rather than being silently rewritten as newly checked.
The old single-dimension questions remain useful as fields, not as reasons to create more URLs. This product owns the combined eligibility decision: class year and checkpoint, major or field, GPA, citizenship or work authorization, and school or applicant geography. Application materials, timing, economics and recruiting outcomes belong to their separate durable products.
