Twelve early-career routes, coded by the field-of-study rule the primary source actually publishes
This comparison asks one narrow question: does the current program source require a specific college major, merely prefer or target a field, or explicitly open the route across majors? It does not infer a major rule from the employer name, the work itself or a later internship.

EXPLICIT_ALL_MAJORS means the source says all majors, all academic backgrounds or any academic discipline can participate. ALL_MAJORS_PREFERRED_FIELDS means the route remains open across majors but names preferred fields. TARGETED_BACKGROUND means the program describes the intended academic background without publishing a named-major eligibility gate. REQUIRED_NAMED_MAJORS means the source makes specific majors an eligibility condition. NO_MAJOR_GATE_STEM_EVIDENCE means the source expressly says a STEM major is unnecessary while still requiring or rewarding STEM coursework, aptitude and interest.
The program facts were checked on September 23, 2026 where the primary page was readable in this run. Aon uses the employer record checked September 22, 2026 because its live page could not be re-read through the research fetcher; the exact source clock is preserved rather than silently moved forward.

In this sample, all eight finance and markets discovery routes explicitly cross major boundaries
The most useful result is not a universal claim about finance recruiting. It is a bounded result about these eight current or recurring finance and markets discovery routes: Girls Who Invest, PIMCO Prep, BNY’s pre-internship programs, Citi Freshman Discovery, both PGIM sophomore externships, Deutsche Bank Spring into Banking and BlackRock Spring Insight all explicitly admit students across majors or academic disciplines.
That does not make the programs unrestricted. BNY says it has a strong focus on business- and computer-science-related majors. PGIM requires a 3.0 GPA and U.S. employment authorization for its externships. Deutsche Bank layers academic-performance and graduation-window requirements onto the 2027 application. BlackRock limits the current Spring Insight cohort by graduation year. The major can be open while another eligibility gate remains hard.
For a student without a finance major or prior finance internship, the correct question is therefore not simply “am I a finance major?” Check the program’s class-year, graduation, GPA, work-authorization and application-timing rules, then show evidence that explains why you want the field.
A preferred background is not the same thing as a required major
Aon provides the cleanest preference example. Its current Sophomore Actuarial Career Discovery posting says all majors are welcome, then names Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics or related fields as preferred. Treat that as an evidence problem rather than rewriting the preference into a hard eligibility rule. A student from another major can still apply, but should make quantitative preparation visible.
IMC Launchpad uses different language. The U.S. page describes the intended audience as second-year students with quantitative and computer-science-related backgrounds who are interested in software engineering or quantitative trading. The reviewed page does not convert that sentence into a list of permitted degree titles. It is safest to code the route as TARGETED_BACKGROUND rather than “all majors” or “CS majors only.”
Valero is a true hard gate. Its 2027 Freshman Engineering Summit requires Chemical, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. The FAQ creates a narrow path for undeclared or pre-engineering students considering one of those three majors, but a project or strong interest does not replace the published major condition for students pursuing another field.
DOE SULI shows why major, coursework and demonstrated aptitude need separate columns
DOE’s SULI FAQ explicitly says applicants are not required to major in natural science, engineering, mathematics or computer science. That does not make the program academically field-neutral. DOE says applicants who show education, aptitude and interest in those fields are most competitive, and the eligibility rules require completed STEM credits before participation.
This distinction matters for students in economics, policy, design, business or another non-STEM major who have real technical coursework. A non-STEM degree title does not automatically exclude them from SULI, but the required credits and research fit still need to exist. Conversely, merely having a STEM major does not erase the program’s GPA, enrollment, citizenship and application-material requirements.
When a program’s degree-title gate is open, build proof at the next layer down: relevant classes, a project, research methods, a technical competition, a lab contribution or another inspectable example. Do not claim a different major; show why your actual preparation fits the work.
How to use the table when your major does not match the job title
Start with the evidence code, not the brand or industry label. If the route is EXPLICIT_ALL_MAJORS, check the remaining hard gates and then decide whether you can explain a credible interest in the work. If it is ALL_MAJORS_PREFERRED_FIELDS or TARGETED_BACKGROUND, compare your coursework and projects with the skills the program is built around. If it is REQUIRED_NAMED_MAJORS, do not assume an unrelated project overrides the published eligibility rule.
For finance discovery programs in this sample, changing majors is usually the wrong response to the eligibility question. The eight finance/markets rows already cross academic disciplines. A better use of time is building evidence that closes the knowledge gap: accounting basics, valuation, markets research, a stock pitch, a case competition, coding work, or another artifact matched to the program.
For technical or research routes, read below the major line. SULI demonstrates that a student can clear the degree-title question and still face course-credit and research-fit requirements. IMC describes a background rather than a permitted-major list. Valero publishes a true named-major gate. Those are three different application decisions.
Methodology: current program-level sources, explicit evidence states and a bounded denominator
Observation window: September 22–23, 2026. This is a purposive comparison of 12 current or recurring early-career routes that reach first-year or second-year students. It is not a census of employers, industries or all undergraduate programs. The counts on this page apply only to these 12 rows.
A field rule is assigned only from the program-level primary source. “All majors” and “any academic discipline” count as explicit broad access. A preferred field is not promoted into a requirement. A description of the target background is not demoted into a no-restriction claim. A named-major requirement is treated as a hard gate unless the same source publishes an exception.
BNY Freshman Jumpstart and Sophomore Summit share one row because BNY publishes the all-majors rule as a common pre-internship eligibility condition on the same current page. PGIM Credit and PGIM Real Estate remain separate rows because they are distinct employer postings with different subject matter and recruiting outcomes. SULI is one row supported by separate eligibility, FAQ and timing pages.
Most primary pages were re-read September 23, 2026. The Aon employer source retains its September 22 check date because that page was not readable through this run’s live fetcher. Reopen the employer or organizer page before applying; application windows and rules can change after the observation date.
