Start with the analyst signal you are actually missing
Current Summer Analyst postings repeatedly name company and industry research, financial analysis, valuation, presentations, due diligence and transaction support. Build one compact work sample that practices a small version of those tasks with public information.
| If this is missing | Build this first | Inspectable output |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting and statement fluency | Three-statement linkage exercise for one public company | Revenue, margins, working capital, debt, cash flow and statement links |
| Company and industry research | Two-page company and sector brief | Business model, operating drivers, competitors, primary sources and unresolved questions |
| Valuation | Small trading-comps set plus a basic DCF range | Peer choice, enterprise-to-equity bridge, assumptions and sensitivities |
| Transaction thinking | Announced-deal memo | Strategic rationale, transaction terms, valuation context, financing and execution risks |
| Client-ready communication | Six-slide advisory-style summary | Clear answer, supporting evidence, assumptions and risks |
| Execution discipline | Clean model and source log | Traceable formulas, dated sources and separated inputs/assumptions |
Do not build six separate projects. Pick the weakest signal and let one transaction case cover several skills at once.
Build one public transaction case you can defend
An announced acquisition involving public companies is a useful first case because the transaction announcement, filings and investor materials give you enough primary evidence to work with. Keep the final output small: roughly two pages or six slides, a simple model and a source log.
Work in this order: explain the buyer and target; record the announced terms and disclosed financing; choose a small peer set; build a valuation range; identify financing and execution risks; change one important assumption; then state what the deal appears to accomplish and what could break the thesis.
A strong case makes one defensible judgment and shows the evidence behind it. A weak one mostly restates the press release. If valuation is still beyond you, stop after the company/industry brief, transaction rationale and financing summary rather than using a model you cannot explain.
Prefer financing to M&A? Compare two funding choices
Use one public company with a plausible funding need and compare debt versus equity on cost, dilution, leverage, maturity, flexibility and risk. Show current debt and liquidity before making the comparison.
This is still a self-directed project. Do not describe it as client work, live deal experience or advice to the company.
Current 2027 postings show what intern work actually looks like
Use current postings to choose what to practice, not to claim that a project is equivalent to employment. The roles below all name analytical and transaction tasks, but their academic-stage and geographic rules differ.
| Role | Current stage | Work named in the posting | Prep implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citi Investment Banking Summer Analyst — London | Posted September 22; penultimate/final-year; rolling | Company/industry research, financial models, valuation, DCF, financing/comparative analysis and presentations | A public transaction case maps to the listed analytical work |
| Bank of America Global Investment Banking Summer Analyst — Singapore | Penultimate-year; apply by September 30, 2026 | Models, valuation and merger consequences, research, client materials and due diligence | Apply if eligible; do not delay for another project |
| Rothschild & Co Global Advisory Summer Analyst — London | Second or penultimate year; rolling | Industry research, company profiles, presentations, Excel models, valuation and transaction coordination | The role names core analyst tasks and includes formal training |
If you qualify for a live role, apply while it is open and keep improving the work sample afterward.
Use early programs only when they add exposure or recruiting access you are missing
Citi Freshman Discovery is a three-day U.S. virtual program for first-year students; Citi says applications normally open in late March or early April for the May program. Citi Early Identification is a three-week U.S. virtual program for sophomores, with March and December cohorts and recurring February and November application windows.
Rothschild & Co’s 2027 UK Global Advisory Spring Insight Programme opens September 29, 2026. It is a four-day London program for first-year students, or second-years on a four-year course, graduating in 2029. Strong performers may receive a fast-track assessment process for the following year’s Summer Internship. That is an assessment opportunity, not a guaranteed interview, internship or offer.
These programs are optional. They should not delay a live internship application whose eligibility rules you already meet.
Stop preparing when you can explain one relevant piece of evidence end to end
Apply when you meet the posting’s academic-stage, location and work-authorization rules; you can explain one relevant piece of work end to end; and you can explain one assumption, calculation or judgment you changed after new information or feedback.
You do not need to master every modeling shortcut first. If an eligible Summer Analyst role is open, submit the application and improve the case in parallel. Label the work truthfully as an independent project, not employment, client work or deal experience.
