Which application should you use?

OSTEM offers project-based experience. Choose the session and assignment through NASA’s official internship page and STEM Gateway; a program deadline does not mean every project is open.

Pathways is federal developmental employment with possible conversion after successful completion. Its reviewed Spring 2027 application window ended September 25, 2026. Check NASA’s positions page for a later opening, then use that vacancy’s USAJOBS instructions and required documents.

The reviewed Spring 2027 Pathways application window was September 21–25, 2026 for a January 25, 2027 start. That window has ended. The reviewed process required matching your major to an eligible position before choosing only center locations listed for it; NASA allowed applications to each position for which the major qualified. Check NASA’s official positions page for any later application window.

DecisionWhat to do
PositionConfirm your major is listed for that Pathways position. If it is not, choose another eligible position instead of applying based on center alone.
CentersChoose no more than two centers, and only from the centers NASA lists as hiring for that position.
ResumeUse a USAJOBS resume that is two pages or fewer. NASA says longer resumes are automatically rejected.
Narrative responsesWrite the content yourself. The Pathways page prohibits AI or AI-assisted tools from writing or adapting narrative responses. NASA’s general Careers guidance is less restrictive about grammar and style, so follow the stricter Pathways instruction for this application.
OSTEM comparisonSeparate STEM Gateway route. Summer 2027 deadline now March 1, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern; checked October 1.
SubmissionThe reviewed September 21–25 Pathways window has ended. Use a later exact USAJOBS announcement if one is published; a saved profile is not a submission.

Use these dates for OSTEM, not every NASA opportunity

Use these dates for OSTEM, not every NASA opportunity

NASA now lists March 1 for Summer 2027 and May 24 for Fall 2027, both at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. Our September 17 observation was February 26 and May 21; those older dates are retained as history, not the current planning cutoff. Check NASA and the selected project before relying on any date.

A published program deadline does not establish that every project is available. Select the session in STEM Gateway, read the project’s own requirements and save its application confirmation. Pathways uses a different system and announcement calendar.

Match your example to the assignment

Match your example to the assignment

Read the task, not only the NASA label. An analysis role needs evidence that you can handle data and explain a result; a communications task needs evidence that you can explain something to an audience. The same application paragraph should not serve both unchanged.

Invented data-project example: 'For a class project, I combined two public datasets by date and location. The first merge created duplicate rows, so I counted records before and after the join and checked whether the keys were unique. I corrected the join and documented the unmatched records. I can bring that habit of checking inputs to a project involving data preparation; I would need training in your team's scientific tools.'

Notice what this says about the applicant: they encountered a plausible failure and tested it. 'Strong analytical skills' makes the same claim without giving the reviewer any evidence.

Do not wait for OSTEM letters that are not required

Do not wait for OSTEM letters that are not required

NASA says OSTEM does not require a recommendation letter. Complete the current Gateway application's required fields rather than using an old blog's document list. For Pathways, use the USAJOBS announcement's required documents and qualification questions instead.

USAJOBS limits a résumé to two pages and 5 MB. Choose evidence relevant to the vacancy rather than shrinking a long résumé into unreadable text. A saved profile is preparation; the finished application is the submission to the actual project or announcement.

Graduation timing can rule out Pathways even when the GPA fits

Graduation timing can rule out Pathways even when the GPA fits

A hypothetical student has ten weeks available at 40 hours a week before finishing the degree. That is 400 hours, which is 80 short of NASA's published 480-hour Pathways requirement. A 2.9 GPA alone does not make that schedule work. The student should examine the announcement and discuss a genuine scheduling question with recruiting, rather than assume the hours can be completed after graduation.

For either route, ask for the worksite, work dates, payment terms and expected attendance. Then compare the assignment itself: what would you deliver, and who would review it? A project you can complete with good supervision is a better basis for choosing than a program name alone.
