The qualifying case is distributed beginning October 31, 2026. Once a team downloads it, NIBS gives the team nine hours to analyze the case and upload a report outlining its recommended solution. The overall qualifying window closes November 15 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern European Standard Time.
Finalists are announced November 27. The top 16 schools advance to the Championship Round from February 7 through February 12, 2027. Participation is a judged international-business competition, not employment with NIBS or the host university.
Your school must be a NIBS member and decides who represents it
The competition is open to undergraduate bachelor-program students only. An institution may enter one team, and the school's dean or official delegate makes the final decision on team composition. NIBS describes the competing team as four undergraduate students supported by a faculty coach or coaches.
The institution must be a NIBS member in good standing. The current registration page lists NIBS institutional membership at €695. That membership cost is separate from the €250 qualifying-round registration fee and is an institutional access requirement, not a student wage or prize.
The reviewed current pages do not publish a minimum GPA, required prior internship, work-authorization requirement or open individual application that bypasses the school. A student interested in competing needs to work through the participating institution rather than assume the public registration form is an individual entry form.
The qualifying round creates a timed recommendation report under real constraints
NIBS gives registered teams access to the qualifying case beginning October 31. After the case is downloaded, the team has nine hours to analyze the international-business problem and upload a report with its recommended solution. Teams can choose when to start within the published qualifying period, but the full qualifying round ends November 15.
That timed format creates concrete evidence before internship recruiting: rapid issue framing, quantitative or qualitative analysis, recommendation choice, written communication and team coordination. The strongest resume bullet identifies your own contribution without claiming that the case competition was client employment.
Treat case materials according to NIBS rules. Preserve your own decision process and allowed output, but do not publish a restricted case or confidential materials simply to create a portfolio link. A recruiter can still evaluate how you reasoned from the problem to a recommendation.
Top-16 status changes the signal and adds a February travel commitment
NIBS announces the 16 schools advancing from the qualifying round on November 27, 2026. Those teams then travel to Cluj-Napoca for the Championship Round, which begins February 7 and ends February 12, 2027.
The championship is a live international case-competition environment built around written business cases, limited preparation time and recommendations to panels that can include senior managers, policymakers and academics. Reaching the top 16 is a materially different credential from registration, so list it only after NIBS announces the result.
If your school advances, confirm academic travel approval, passports or visas where applicable, accommodation and transport before treating attendance as settled. The organizers publish competition timing and fees, but each team remains responsible for transportation and accommodation.
The current championship fee is €1,300 per team, plus travel and accommodation
The current NIBS registration page lists a non-refundable €250 qualifying-round registration fee. Teams that reach the Championship Round pay an additional €1,300 per team by January 8, 2027. That championship fee covers four students and one coach and includes most meals plus the Thursday touring day.
An additional coach costs €325. NIBS says teams are responsible for transportation to the competition and accommodation during Championship Week. Those are team or institutional competition costs, not deductions from wages, because participants are not employees.
Some older NIBS overview copy can show earlier fee figures. For the 2027 cycle, use the current registration page and 2027 key-dates page for the live €1,300 participant fee rather than carrying an older number into a budget.
Use the analysis and advancement level as proof, not as an internship title
A clean resume label after the qualifying round is 'NIBS Worldwide Case Competition 2027 — Team Member' with a short description of the international-business problem, your analytical contribution and the recommendation process at a non-confidential level. If the school reaches the top 16, add Championship Round qualifier only after the November 27 announcement.
NIBS does not promise an internship interview, employer conversion or paid job from participation. The competition can still strengthen applications for consulting, strategy, business operations, finance, international business and other roles where you need to defend a recommendation under time pressure.
