Geography and commute logic
Area or corridor: Downtown · Practical implication: Corporate, banking, and professional-services offices with rail and bus access.
Area or corridor: Energy Corridor · Practical implication: Large concentration of energy employers west of downtown; often car-dependent.
Area or corridor: Galleria / Uptown · Practical implication: Professional-services, investment, and corporate offices with traffic-sensitive access.
Area or corridor: Texas Medical Center · Practical implication: Healthcare and research cluster with distinct transit and parking patterns.
Area or corridor: The Woodlands and suburban campuses · Practical implication: Some employers sit far from central Houston; reverse commute and relocation decisions require address-level analysis.
Transit and transportation
METRO operates bus and light rail, but the metro’s scale and dispersed job centers make many commutes car-dependent. Flood risk, parking, tolls, heat, and drive time should be included in housing decisions.
A commute check should use the office’s full street address and expected arrival time. Test weekday service, transfers, last-mile walking, late departure, weekend options, and the cost of a fallback ride. For hybrid roles, verify which days the team actually expects in-office attendance.
Cost model
Use a monthly model with these lines:
- Gross cash compensation and any signing, relocation, housing, or travel support.
- Federal, state, local, and payroll taxes based on current official sources.
- Rent, deposits amortized over the stay, utilities, internet, and furniture.
- Transit, parking, tolls, fuel, insurance, maintenance, and occasional ride-hail.
- Food, work clothing, laundry, professional events, and healthcare.
- One-time travel into and out of the city.
- A contingency reserve for at least one material surprise.
Texas has no individual state income tax, but federal and payroll taxes remain. Transportation and housing can outweigh the apparent tax advantage for a poorly located internship.
Employer clusters
Cluster: Energy and energy transition · What students should know: Upstream, midstream, downstream, oilfield services, power, renewables, carbon, hydrogen, and infrastructure create finance, engineering, trading, strategy, and operations roles.
Cluster: Investment banking and private capital · What students should know: Energy and industrial specialization shapes transaction work and technical preparation.
Cluster: Healthcare and life sciences · What students should know: The Texas Medical Center supports healthcare operations, research, finance, data, and innovation roles.
Cluster: Aerospace, logistics, and industrials · What students should know: Ports, transportation, manufacturing, and space-related organizations broaden the market beyond energy.
Is Houston affordable for an intern?
It depends on compensation, exact dates, housing channel, commute, taxes, and support. Use current listings and a dated budget rather than a citywide average.
Should I live near the office or near other interns?
Minimize the recurring cost that matters most. For five in-office days, commute reliability usually dominates. For hybrid work, social support and access to several employment nodes may deserve more weight.
Do I need a car?
The answer is address-specific. Test the actual commute and weekend needs. Include parking, insurance, tolls, fuel, and risk of breakdown before deciding.
Turn this market into an application shortlist
Start with a role family in the local employer map, then narrow by the actual reporting site. Save the employer-controlled posting before treating a name on this page as an opportunity. For each viable role, compare the work, enrollment requirements, stated compensation unit and the cost of reaching that site. A regional employer list is not a verified vacancy list.
Historical example · 2026-09-04
Use the local transport and housing sources for the schedule you would actually work. Keep a quote for the correct dates and a cash plan for deposits or costs due before the first paycheck; historical housing figures in the research are not current offers.
