Ten routes, coded by the exact kind of experience statement the source makes

This table answers one narrow question: what does the current or most recently reviewed primary program page actually say about experience before a student applies? The coding does not turn silence into a waiver and does not treat ‘no prior finance knowledge’ as the same claim as ‘no prior work experience.’

EXPLICIT_NO_PRIOR_WORK_EXPERIENCE is the strongest waiver in this sample. EXPLICIT_NO_PRIOR_FIELD_EXPERIENCE waives previous experience in the named field. EXPLICIT_NO_PRIOR_FIELD_KNOWLEDGE waives knowledge, not work history. LIMITED_PRIOR_EXPOSURE_ENCOURAGED is a positive signal toward beginners without claiming a formal waiver. PRIOR_INTERNSHIP_NOT_STATED means the reviewed eligibility surface does not name a prior internship as a condition.

The page was assembled September 23, 2026. Individual source records keep their own observation dates, including September 17 for the NIST SURF record and September 22 for most previously registered program records. Recheck a live application before submitting.

Only one row here explicitly waives prior work experience itself

PIMCO Prep is the cleanest zero-experience statement in this sample: its current page says no prior finance background or work experience is required. That is stronger than a page that merely omits an experience requirement.

Girls Who Invest and Bracebridge explicitly waive previous finance or investment-management experience. Jane Street FTTP explicitly waives prior finance knowledge. Those statements are useful, but they are narrower. None of them means every other selection factor disappears, and Jane Street’s wording is about knowledge rather than work history.

Citi Freshman Discovery uses a different signal. The standing page particularly encourages first-year students with limited prior financial-services exposure. That makes the route beginner-oriented, but it is not converted here into a formal ‘no experience required’ rule.

Five programs do not publish a prior-internship gate on the reviewed page

Explore Microsoft, BNY Freshman Jumpstart, Valero’s Freshman Engineering Summit, BlackRock Spring Insight and NIST SURF all publish meaningful eligibility conditions, but the reviewed program surfaces do not name a previous internship as a condition. That supports PRIOR_INTERNSHIP_NOT_STATED and nothing stronger.

The distinction matters because these routes are not interchangeable. Explore Microsoft is paid internship employment. NIST SURF is full-time research. BNY Jumpstart, Valero’s summit and BlackRock Spring Insight are development or insight programs rather than normal summer employment. A student who wants a first paid work relationship should filter on relationship type after filtering on eligibility.

Do not infer that prior work is irrelevant to selection. A program can omit a formal prior-internship gate and still evaluate academic performance, projects, technical readiness, research fit or other evidence.

If you have never interned, choose the next route by relationship type

Want actual paid employment? Explore Microsoft is the clearest traditional internship in this sample. NIST SURF is a full-time research fellowship rather than an employer insight event. Recheck the live application because neither row is labeled ‘automatic for beginners.’

Want a lower-stakes field test before formal internship recruiting? PIMCO Prep, GWI, Jane Street FTTP, Citi Freshman Discovery, BNY Jumpstart, Valero and BlackRock create education, research exposure, shadowing, project work or recruiting context without being interchangeable with employment. Bracebridge calls its program a winternship and includes analyst training and group research, but its reviewed source does not justify inventing a salary claim.

The practical order is eligibility first, relationship second, then timing. A program that explicitly welcomes beginners can still be less useful than a real paid role if your résumé already has coursework and projects but lacks external work accountability.

Current timing changes which beginner-friendly routes are actionable

Girls Who Invest is open in this snapshot with a final deadline of October 15, 2026. Bracebridge closes October 16. BlackRock Spring Insight closes December 4. BNY says Freshman Jumpstart registration begins January 11, 2027, and Valero runs applications January 4 through February 10, 2027.

PIMCO says EMEA and Americas registration for April 2027 is coming soon. NIST says the 2027 SURF vacancy is expected to open in mid-October 2026 with applications due around the end of January 2027. Jane Street FTTP currently offers notification signup rather than a cohort-specific application date on the reviewed page. Do not fabricate a deadline when the primary source has not published one.

Use the broader freshman/sophomore deadline calendar when timing, not prior experience, is the main constraint.

Methodology: code only the claim the source can support

This is a bounded 10-route comparison, not a census of every freshman or sophomore program. The cohort intentionally mixes paid internships, research, educational programs, discovery programs, insight events and a winternship so students can see why ‘no previous internship’ and ‘no experience required’ are different questions.

An explicit waiver is coded only when the primary program source says it. A page that names class year, GPA, citizenship, major or return-to-school rules but says nothing about prior internships is coded PRIOR_INTERNSHIP_NOT_STATED. No employer-wide assumption is imported into a separate program. No finance-knowledge waiver is upgraded into a work-experience waiver.

Counts on this page describe these 10 rows only: four explicit waivers of some prior work, field experience or field knowledge; one limited-exposure encouragement signal; five PRIOR_INTERNSHIP_NOT_STATED rows. Reopen the primary source before applying because requirements and application states can change after the observation date.
